Waghorn's Overland Mail - Eastbound 1840 (Aug 4): Entire letter from London to Madras, endorsed "via Marseilles & Egypt", annotated at top right "180 / GWW" by George W. Wheatley, struck with "CARE OF MESSRS. WAGHORN &
Co. / LONDON ALEXANDRIA" in black (Sidebottom type 7). No rates in manuscript for payment to Alexandria and thus probably carried by hand outside the Mails to Egypt, and carried from Marseilles (Aug 9) on the "Prometheus" to Malta (Aug 13), from
there to Alexandria on the "HMS Alecto", departing Suez (Aug 21) on the EIC "Zenobia", with framed "BOMBAY / STEAMER LETTER / Bearing" in black (Sept 11) with manuscript charge of 19 annas due to pay: 9 annas for Steam postage to Madras + 10 annas
for a letter from Bombay up to 1 tola in weight and Madras 'G.P.O.' arrival (Sept 21) in red. A fine and scarce entire. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time just 38 days to Bombay. Provenance: Collection Max Uehlinger, Christie's, London, 12 March

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Eastbound 1847 (March 2): Envelope from London addressed to Alexander Gibbon, Assistant Surgeon KCS, passenger Bombay Steamer 15th March, in Alexandria, Egypt; endorsed "via Southampton" at lower left
and struck with octagonal framed "FORWARDED BY / WAGHORN & Co. / OVERLAND AGENTS / LONDON" in black. Further manuscript notation at top "Dated 2nd March. Rec'd Alexandria 11th June 1847". This cachet unrecorded by both John K. Sidebottom and
Peter A.S. Smith and probably not used in a postal capacity but sent with baggage / contained a telegram from England to Alexandria - Waghorn's business was faltering by this date and mostly confined to passengers and freight. Nevertheless extremely
rare, one of just two examples known (both housed in this collection). Signed Sorani. Provenance: Collection Emile Antonini, DF, Zurich, 10-15 April 1983, lot 32131; collection W.O. Acterberg, DF, Geneva, 14 Feb 1999, lot 10054 (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1836 (Nov 23): An entire Missionary letter from Calcutta to the London Missionary Society, endorsed "By Overland Conveyance" with manuscript "TFW / 16" in top right corner (Thomas Fletcher
Waghorn, the docketing as later famously used by Geo. W. Wheatley), struck with "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN / COSSIER" in black (Sidebottom type 2). The cover travelled by the "Fyzul Kurreem", a private sailing vessel on 1 December 1836 from Calcutta to
Cosseir on the Red Sea, whereupon the letter was transported either across the desert to Kena (Qena) and up the Nile privately or was landed at Suez and then crossed through to Alexandria where the letter was carried privately to Marseille (this
describer feels the former option is more in line with Waghorn's ideas at the time). Disinfected on arrival in Marseille with slits and struck with two line "PURIFIÉ AU LAZARET / MARSEILLE" on reverse in black and on obverse with entry marking of
framed "PAS D'OUTREMER" and MARSEILLE cds in black (May 22). Charged "2/2d." due upon delivery with London arrival cds (May 27) on reverse where charged "2/2sd." due to pay in manuscript - 1/7d. for Marseille to England and 7d. postage for the 74
miles from Dover to London. This rare entire was the discovery example of this cachet (in 1939) and just one other example is known to exist (ex the Michael Manning collection, lot 159) - which was received both in Marseille and in London on the same
day. A great rarity of Indian, Egyptian and British Postal History. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: The contents state "An opportunity now offering to send you a copy of our last report by a conveyance which may probably put you in possesion of it 2 months
earlier than by the usual route, I have embraced it....two merchants are about to proceed overland and have kindly undertaken to forward the Mail to Suez for the Steamer" (Thomas Boaz). Note 2: This cover is illustrated in "Overland Mail" by John K.
Sidebottom on page 148 and discussed in further detail on pages 151-153. Sidebottom considered the initials in the top right corner to be Waghorn's but this remains as conjecture although "By Overland Conveyance" does appear to be in Waghorn's hand.
Note 3: The earliest Eastbound cover carried by the Waghorn service. Provenance: Collection J.K. Sidebottom OBE, Robson Lowe, London, 25 Nov 1953, lot 23; collection Dr. William Byam OBE, Robson Lowe, London, 24-25 Oct 1961, lot 20; Collection J.

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1836 (Dec 2): Entire letter from Bombay to Alloa, Scotland endorsed "via Suez & Malta" at left; struck on reverse with Waghorn's Agent's large circular handstamp on reverse "FORW'D BY
MCGREGOR BROWNRIGG & Co. / BOMBAY / No. 567" in black and superb framed "To the care of / Mr. WAGHORN" struck in black (Sidebottom type 10), carried from Bombay on the Red Sea route, the entire departing Alexandria on "HMS Blazer" (Jan 30, 1837)
arriving in Malta (Feb 4) where disinfected by toasting against Cholera with Malta Lazaretto red wax seal on reverse. From Malta on the "HMS Firefly" via Gibraltar to Falmouth where struck with "MALTA / F" skeleton handstamp in green on reverse
alongside London cds in red (Feb 28) and struck with distinctive Mail tax "½" in Falmouth in black. Charged due "10/3d." on arrival in Alloa. Partial and interesting transcript with the lot concerning Bombay Steamers, a fine and extremely rare entire
- earlier than the eight covers recorded in Sidebottom. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 88 days. Note 2: Rates: India rate to Red Sea would have been prepaid 1 rupee 8 annas for a weight of up to 2 tolas = approximately 18 grams. British Rate:
Triple rate of three times the 2/3d. Packet rate (= 6/9d.) + Inland postage of 3/6d. = 10/3d. Inland Postage on mails via London was commuted by 2d. per single letter for the journey from Falmouth, so the 689 miles to Alloa, which would have cost 3 x
1/4d. = 4s. was reduced by 6d. to 3/6d. The standard "½d." charge was applied in Falmouth in black. Note 3: Illustrated as mounted on the album page with photostat of part of reverse showing the Malta Lazaretto red wax seal (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1836 (Dec 2): Entire letter excluding enclosures from Bombay to London, with partial strike of scarce "INDIA / Packet Letter / PAID" somewhat obscured by manuscript on reverse by "Care of
Thos. Waghorn Esq., to be forwarded by / the best opportunity for Britain, with / Edmund Bibby & Co.'s compliments / Bombay 12 Jan"; with framed "To the care of / Mr. WAGHORN" struck in black (Sidebottom type 10), and further inscribed "via Suez"
and "1½ oz." on obverse and numbered "84". Carried on the EIC "Hugh Lindsay" from Bombay (Jan 18) arriving at Suez (Feb 15) thence by French Packet from Alexandria to Marseille, where disinfected by fumigation against Cholera with two line "PURIFIÉ
LAZARET / MARSEILLE" in black displaying well on reverse. Obverse with framed "PAYS D'OUTREMER" and Marseille cds (March 16) in black and thence to London (March 21) where charged "12s." in manuscript to pay (a figure somewhat difficult to work out
under the 1837 rates - see the next lot). A fine and most interesting cover. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 68 days. Note 2: This is one of the Huth correspondence covers mentioned by Sidebottom on page 151, at the time of his book this would
have been the earliest example known (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1839 (June 23): Entire letter from Bellary, India to Edinburgh, Scotland endorsed "To go by the first Steamer from Bombay to Suez" at top, with framed "BELLARY / Paid" in red and rated "9
annas" in manuscript, struck in Bombay with superb strike of framed "FROM MR LANGLEY / AGENT TO MR. WAGHORN" in Bombay in black (Sidebottom type 5) with oval framed "INDIA" in red above. Carried on the EIC "Berenice" from Bombay (July 4) via Basra
and the Persian Gulf (notwithstanding the endorsement - the next voyage to Suez was by the "Euphrates" which was not a steamer, on July 23, her Mails did not arrrive in London until late October). The EIC "Berenice" transferred her Mail (some 3'991
letters) to the EIC "Hugh Lindsay" at Muscat in the Gulf on July 11th., but thereafter details remain unclear. Marseille transit cds (Sept 1) in black on reverse suggests that the cover was on the French Packet "Mentor" which had sailed on August
17th. from Alexandria. Struck with framed Scottish "½d." tax mark in green suggests a Falmouth landing, however Marseille to Falmouth would normally have taken at least 10 days with a clear sailing. Charged "2/6d." due to pay in manuscript which is
2d. short of the normal 2/8d. which would have been due on a letter up to ¼ ounce, but corresponds to the 2d. deducted for mail from Falmouth to the capital. London transit cds on reverse (Sept 8) and Edinburgh arrival cds in red (Sept 10). An
interesting quandry, but the cover itself is extraordinarily rare with just 3 "Langley" covers recorded by Sidebottom and 5 recorded by Peter Smith. Signed Todd AIEP. Cert. RPSL (1998). Note 1: Journey time 77 days. Provenance: Spink, London, 16 July

Overland Mail - Westbound 1839 (Oct 19): Entire letter from Thomas Waghorn in Malta mailed to O'Reilly at the Times Newspaper Office in Paris, the contents relating one of Waghorn's greatest coups when he borrowed Mehemet Ali
Pasha's steamer "Generoso" to carry the Mails personally from Alexandria to Malta; evidently written in haste with the entire showing small cartridge "PAQUEBOTS / DE LA / MEDITERRANÉE" in red, disinfected with the red wax seal of the Malta Lazaretto
on reverse and the front panel signed "Express, Mr. Waghorn". Carried by the "HMS Blazer" from Malta (Oct 24) to Marseille and thence to Paris with arrival cds (Oct 29) in blue. Various rates - the letter had an enclosure and 20 Newspapers - and thus
charged "90" décimes due upon delivery. Waghorn's letter is a priceless example of his self publicity (albeit this time, deserved): "The enclosed truly important news* came by the "Berenice" steamer to Suez - pray read it at once before you read
another line of this - I also send a file of 20 late Newspapers - but Hannay's letter contains all they say....The following is the reason of my coming to Malta. This news arrived at Alexandria and there was no English or French Steamer there to take
it on to Malta. Therefore the Merchants of Alexandria of which Waghorn & Co. is the last signature (I enclose a copy of it) got one of the Pasha's Steamers and came himself as Navigator in order to save time and thus through those merchants and
Waghorn all of the Govt. of England, India its merchants, its Press, is population are indebted to Mehemet Ali of Egypt for sending them on by one of his own Steamers and to Waghorn for bringing them. Pray make much of this...". An extraordinary
entire. Note 1: See also items # 23, 70, 72 in this sale with the latter two lots actually carried by Waghorn on the "Generoso". Note 2: * The news was almost certainly about the British success at the Battle of Ghazni in the First Afghan War (July
23, 1839). Provenance: Argyll Etkin, London, 20 May 2010, lot 776 (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Westbound 1839 (Nov 13): Special letter-sheet with imprinted "FORWARDED BY / MR. WAGHORN'S AGRA AGENCY / MR. MCCALLUM. / Registration fee paid, BOMBAY" (applied after the letter was sealed, one of
four such recorded) mailed from Agra, India to Grindlay's East India Agency in London, struck on reverse with watery "AGRA / Paid" datestamp of despatch in red annotated "1 rupee 2 annas" in manuscript for Steam Postage of 8 annas and inland postage
of 10 annas (repeated in manuscript but the "8" changed to "9" annas due to the recent rate increase of Steam postage). Carried by the EIC "Berenice" from Bombay (Nov 18), arriving at Suez (Dec 16), thence carried by "HMS Blazer" from Alexandria to
Malta, (Dec 29), the "HMS Megeara" to Marseille with London arrival (Jan 9, 1840) cds in black where "3/6d." charge was raised - 1/10d. British postage and 1/8d. French postage for a letter under ½ ounce. Somewhat surprisingly lacking transit
markings but the "3/6d." due was presumably deleted once Waghorn's Office had been paid. Scarce and fine. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time 57 days (Image

The Aftermath 1846 (Feb 22): An "Article of Agreement" between Thomas Waghorn and the "Times" Newspaper, for a trial period of 6 months, for Waghorn to deliver a sealed Packet from Bombay to the Times in London by the "Trieste
Route", provided that it should arrive prior to the Government Packet via Marseilles - as Waghorn had proved possible in 1845. Signed by Thomas M. Alsager for the Times, Thomas Waghorn and by George W. Wheatley as a Witness. The plan did not come to
fruition as it failed to receive Government approval - see "The Overland Mail" by J.K. Sidebottom, pages 100-105. Provenance: Cavendish, Derby, 6 March 2013, lot 330 (Image 1)

The Aftermath 1847 (Nov 5): The demise of Waghorn & Co., printed circular stating that Waghorn's buinesses will close on Dec 24th next, and that he makes this change with regret after "20 year's service for the public
advantage". Waghorn & Co. also state they will pay all outstanding accounts; whilst George W. Wheatley who had been Waghorn's first and most trusted employee states that he will, on Nov 16, be travelling to India to wind up the business there and
seeks further commissions. Whilst Waghorn retired and was heavily in debt, Wheatley continued in the business of freight as can be seen from the (scarce) 1920 colour postcard, drawing heavily on the Waghorn legend, enclosed with the lot (Image 1)

The Aftermath 1848 (Jan 3): Waghorn's "Memorial" printed in grey-blue paper, circulated in search of support to pay his debts, totalling some £8'000, with four pages of text, quoted in full in "The Overland Mail" by J.K.
Sidebottom on pages 114-119. Folded for display, a somewhat tragic booklet considering the benefits that Waghorn had made to the Mails, all achieved without any help from the British Government whatsoever; sold together with Testimonials from famous
people of the day with a printed copy of a letter from Sir Robert Gordon, British Ambassador to Vienna (Nov 1, 1846); H. U. Addington at the Foreign Office in London (Jan 10, 1848) and another from the Foreign Office from the Earl of Aberdeen (Jan
31, 1848), Viscount Combermere, former Commander in Chief in India (Feb 24, 1848); letter signed by Thomas Waghorn addressed "My Lord" and probably sent to Lord John Russell, Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioning the enclosure of the "Memorial"
booklet asking for support to raise the sum of £8'000 to cover his debts; together with two personal letters from Joseph Hume MP to Waghorn (Oct and Dec, 1848) about continuing efforts to secure a greater recompense than the £1'500 voted to
him by the House of Commons, and his Obituary as printed in the Times, with two postcards from the Waghorn statue erected initially in Port Tewfik and now in Suez. A rare group and generally very fine. Provenance: All except the postcards are ex

The Waghorn Organisation 1837 (May 15): Printed 32 page Booklet "Egypt in 1837" by Thomas Waghorn with his thoughts on Egypt: "this pamphlet is dedicated to the Members of Parliament... (to) induce in them some sort of
sympathy for Egypt"....with notations on the strength of the Egyptian Army (7'450 troops in Kordofan & Sennar; 14'800 troops in Hejaz & Yemen), the strength of Egypt's Navy, Britain's possibility of stopping the threat of "Russian Invasion of
our Eastern Territories (India) will exist no longer" should Britain make a Treaty direct with Mohamed (Mehemet) Ali and not with Turkey - all entirely accurate as in 1840 Mohammed Ali Pasha did indeed stifle the Ottoman Empire. Together with 28
sheets of hand-written thoughts by Waghorn on how to reduce the power of the French in Egypt, written in his own hand with some corrections added in both ink and pencil. An entirely unique document along with a very rare Pamphlet. Provenance:

1829/50: The archive of letters to Thomas Waghorn, including letters from Lord John Russell, Lord Wellington's secretary "The Duke begs leave to inform him that he can have nothing to say to his plan for carrying
letters to India excepting through the channel of the Postmaster General...", further entire letter from the Duke of Wellingon to Waghorn in Rochester (Dec 1830) in the same vein, 1842 and 1845 letters from the Admiralty, 1848 autographed letter
sheet from William Gladstone, largely because Waghorn was in need of funds, was ill and searched for help and remuneration for his services from the Government, with superb 1848 letter from Joseph Hume MP stating that Waghorn's route "during the War
in Afghanistan was invaluable and that Mr. Waghorn deserves a reward", 1849 signed letter from Mrs. Waghorn, 1850 letter from Downing Street from Lord John Russell recommending an addition to Mrs. Waghorn's pension "in the sum of £15, making
