Waghorn's Overland Mail - Eastbound 1837: Entire letter with, sadly one internal page missing, from London to Wetmore & Co. in Canton, China endorsed at top "via Marseilles" and struck with superb "CARE OF MR WAGHORN /
ALEXANDRIA" handstamp in black (Sidebottom type 4b - taller lettering), docketed at top right "66 / G.W.W." by George W. Wheatley (Waghorn's Agent in Falmouth). Circular "ANGLETERRE PAR CALAIS" in red and oval "P-D" also in red below. Forwarded again
in Bombay as endorsed "Care of Messrs. Leckie & Co., Bombay" and this erased in manuscript when the letter was sent on to China on the "Pearl" with endorsement at top. Full manuscript charges in red on obverse with charges amounting to £1
3s. 6½d. for a letter weighing between 2-2¼ ounces under the 1836 rates = 6/8d. British postage + 16/10½d. French postage to Alexandria. Reverse unusually bears the total charge due of "£2 13s. 6½d." in manuscript (thus Waghorn's charges =
£1 10s.), and notification of receipt "Wetmore, Jan 4, 1838" in manuscript. An extraordinary cover to this rare destination and full of charm. Signed Todd AIEP. Provenance: Stanley Gibbons, London, 21 Nov 1997, lot 14 (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Eastbound 1837 (Dec 6): Large part entire letter concerning business matters from France to Wetmore & Co. in Canton, China endorsed at base "Par Alexandrie et les Bateaux à vapeur de Marseilles",
and carried privately outside the Mails to Marseille as no French charges are apparent; from there carried on the steamer "Dante" (Dec 8) to Malta and onwards to Alexandria on "HMS Firefly" arriving in Alexandria (Dec 22). Two fine strikes of oval
framed "Care of / Mr. Waghorn / Alexandrie" struck in red (Sidebottom type 6) on obverse and over flap on the reverse of the cover. Carried from Suez (Jan 1, 1838) on the EIC "Berenice" to Bombay (Jan 21) and forwarded as endorsed "Care of Messrs.
Leckie & Co., Bombay" and Leckie would have paid the 1 rupee Red Sea postage prior to the cover being sent as an enclosure to Calcutta where struck with framed "CALCUTTA / G.P.O. / SHIP LETTER" (Feb 10) in red and sent on per "Sylph" to Canton. A
fine cover to a very rare destination bearing one of the rarest of all Waghorn cachets. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: Journey time to Calcutta, 66 days. This is probably the first of the two recorded covers with this Waghorn handstamp, mentioned in
Sidebottom on page 150. Note 2: Peter Smith's census in "Egypt Stamps & Postal History" on page 30 recorded just three examples of this marking. Sidebottom recorded just two. Note 3: Illustrated in "Thomas Fletcher Waghorn Überlandweg Aegypten"

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Eastbound 1839 (Sept 13): Large part entire letter from Liverpool to Bombay, endorsed "Single, 14 Sep 1839" and also "via Marseilles" at top, struck with superb strike of "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN /
ALEXANDRIA L'POOL" in black (Sidebottom type 8), annotated by Waghorn's Liverpool Agents, D. and T. Willis at top right "No. 14 / D&T W" in red ink, with manuscript rates at top: 1/10d. for British postage and 2/6d. for French postage = 4/4d. for
an under ¾ ounce letter. This erased and 1 shilling deducted for the Red Sea passage and thus prepaid "3/4d." in red manuscript with framed "PAID AT / LIVERPOOL" and London tombstone 'Paid' datestamp (Sept 16) in red. London cds on reverse in black
(Sept 16). No further markings and it is possible the cover was sent on as an enclosure or it would have transitted thus: from Marseille on the "Mageara" to Malta (Sept 25), thence on "HMS Volcano" to Alexandria (Oct 8) departing Suez on the EIC
"Berenice" (Oct 11) to Bombay (Oct 29). Item number 4 in the Sidebottom listing of the 8 known covers and extremely rare. Provenance: Collection W.O. Acterberg, DF, Geneva, 14 Feb 1999, lot 10050 (Image 1)

Waghorn's Overland Mail - Eastbound 1840 (Jan 15): Entire letter (less the power or Attorney also enclosed) from London to Madras, prepaid at "7/3½d." in red manuscript for a letter under ¾ ounce with an enclosure (at 1836
rate of 1/8d. British postage + 5/7½d. French postage), annotated at top right "C 61 / GWW" by George W. Wheatley on despatch; beautifully struck with "CARE OF MESSRS. WAGHORN & Co. / LONDON ALEXANDRIA" in black (Sidebottom type 7) and with
Wheatley's handstamp (large format) "PER FRENCH STEAMER / VIA MARSEILLES" in black. Reverse with London despatch cds (Jan 16) in black, thence with "Angl. / Calais" entry mark in red (Jan 17) and oval "P-D" in red. From Marseille (Jan 21) carried on
the French steamers "Eurotas" to Malta, the "Sesostris" (Jan 21) to Syra, thence from Alexandria to Suez where placed on board the EIC "Berenice" on February 23, with eventual arrival of framed "BOMBAY / Bearing" where charged "15" annas for onward
transmission to Madras. A magnificent and famous cover of great charm. Signed Todd AIEP. Note 1: By this date the importance of Waghorn & Co. was beginning to wane with the opening of the French route which allowed British steamers to carry mail
from Marseilles to Alexandria direct. However in this instance, neither Waghorn nor the British Post Office could help the delays seen here in the monthly service East of Suez. Note 2: Journey time 66 days. Provenance: Collection Frederick Rowland
Hill, Christie's, London, 5 Dec 1989, lot 482 (illustrated on the front cover of the catalogue). (Image 1)
