1629 cover imagePOSTAL SERVICES OF THE RAILWAYS IN THE GRAND DUCHY 1844/1860:
Important and highly specialised exhibition study comprising 144
covers mounted on 131 exhibition pages, comprehensively documenting
the development of the railway postal services in the Grand Duchy
of Tuscany from the opening of the Strada Ferrata “Leopolda” in
1844 through to the unification period. The collection is
systematically arranged by railway companies and lines, including
the S.F. Leopolda, S.F. Lucca–Pisa / Lucca–Pistoia, S.F. Lucchesi,
S.F. Maria Antonia, S.F. Centrale Toscana and S.F. Livornesi, with
clear treatment of mergers and network expansion. Postal markings
are classified according to F.B. Petrucci, with detailed study of
station datestamps, railway route markings, private markings and
tariffs. The exhibit includes material from the principal stations
(Livorno, Pisa, Firenze, Empoli, Lucca, Pistoia, Siena, etc.) as
well as smaller intermediate offices, illustrating opening periods,
line extensions and operational changes. Introductory pages provide
historical background, construction phases, opening dates and a
mapped overview of the Tuscan railway network, placing the postal
material in its proper historical and infrastructural context. The
work reflects sustained research and careful organisation,
presenting a coherent and in-depth study of Tuscan railway postal
history in the pre-Unification era. A substantial and scholarly
exhibition collection from this classic and increasingly elusive
field of Italian States postal history, offering significant scope
for further expansion or competitive exhibition. Provenance: Ex
