2201 cover imageBeirut Registration 1894: Preprinted bilingual (Turkish & French)
envelope for the Return of Acknowledgement of Receipt /
Registration Forms to the St. Louis, USA Post Office, struck with
weak BEYROUTH cds in black, "Registered / London" transit in red
(Aug 15) and two line "ST. LOUIS, MO / AUG 26, 1894" arrival in
blue on obverse; reverse with Port Said cds, Alexandria cds and New
York transits. An extremely rare usage - believed to be the sole
example from any Post Office in the Turkish Empire. Unique. Note:
The UPU Treaty of Vienna in July 1892, required that AR Forms be
filled in at destination and then mailed back under registered
cover to the Post Office of origin - the Turkish script on this
cover states "Official documents and samples returned from one post
office to another" and the French reads "List of returned
registered objects". (Image 1) (Image 2)
