Lettersheet from Sulina to Trieste, endorsed "Via Contp", bearing
1874 Fine Whiskers 10 s. blue, one on top of obverse, one on
reverse (cut when cover was opened), both tied by clear SULINA cds
(Tchilinghirian fig. 840), "RECOM:" handstamp alongside, partial
"TRIEST RECOMAND:" arrival backstamp. The cover with file folds and
minor toning, nevertheless the latest despatch at the Austrian post
office in Sulina in the describer's census, the second last from
May 1877. This office was officially closed in July 1879.

440 cover imageAustrian Offices in the Dobrudja, Tulcea 1853 (Aug 8): Entire
letter from Tulcea to Galatz, struck by superb oval "AGENZIA DEL
LLOYD AUSTRIACO / Tulcia" handstamp in blue (Tchilinghirian fig.
836). Cover disinfected in Galatz, the "PORTULU SAU CURATIT AA
CAPITANIA / GALATI" disinfection cachet in light blue struck at
lower left (Meyer page 123). The cover shows two receiver names in
Greek and Latin writing with the Latin name added by the Lloyd
agency in Galatz. This was the person who obtained the cover from
the agency and transfered it to the person noted in Greek writing
as there was no local delivery of the mail. Damage due to the
cleaning procedure however skillfully repaired internally with
Japan paper. Cert. Goller (2026). Reference: Displayed and

Spediz. Postale in Jsmail“ via Tulcea to the consulate in Burgas,

blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 837). Horizontal file fold well away from
the cancellation, nevertheless a fine usage from this sought-after

Entire letter from Tulcea to Ithaca, Ionian Islands, bearing 1864
Arms 15 s. bistre, tied by superb TULTSCHA despatch cds
(Tchilinghirian fig. 837) in blue. The cover shows some perforation
toning and writing is visible from the outer side, it was not
struck by any transit or arrival datestamps. Note: In spite of the
fact that the Ionian Islands became part of Greece in May 1864, no
inland postage fee of 20 lepta was charged. This may be due to the
fact that the Greek postal rules were not yet in force, compare

(July 11): Combination Envelope from Bath to Galatz, forwarded to
Tulcea, endorsed "via Belgium & Vienne", bearing G.B. 2 d. blue
plate 9 and right wing-margined pair of 4 d. vermillion,
scissor-separated, tied by clear "BATH-53" duplex in black and
crisp "AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN" transit (July 12) datestamp in blue,
oval PD in red alongside. LONDON & BAZIASCH transit as well as
GALATZ arrival (July 20) backstamps. Weiterfranco of 'W 3'
(silbergroschen) in blue crayon from Prussia to Austria. The
receiver in Galatz had moved to Tulcea and the cover was posted
again at the Austrian Consular post office, franked with 1864 Arms
10 s. blue tied by GALATZ cds (July 20), and arrived at the
addressee's hands the next day following his docketing note on
reverse. Some perforation irregularities of the Austrian Levant
adhesive, the pair with minor faults due to their position at the
cover's edges, of no importance for this impressive, most
attractive and desirable cover showing the colourful combination of
the 10 d. January 1863 rate from the UK to Galatz and the 10 s.
rate within the Levant. Cert. Goller (2026). Provenance: Collection

Partially prepaid mourning envelope originating from Ismail,
despatched at the Austrian office in Tulcea and directed to Syra,
Greece bearing 1864 Arms 15 s. bistre, tied by fair TULTSCHA
despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 837) in black, upon arrival
charged with '20' lepta in blue crayon. Cleaned plates printing
1868/69 20 l. blue applied and tied by SYROS arrival cds (March 16,
1869). The 20 lepta shaved at left & base, a clean and rare
combination cover, only few known to the describer sent from the
Lloyd P.O. in Tulcea either to Syros or Corfu. Signed Tseriotis

despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 837) in black, "RECOM:" handstamp
alongside (unlisted by Tchilinghirian). Oval "WIEN RECOMMAND:"
transit and thimble DORNBACH arrival (July 20) backstamps. One
blunted perf of the 15 soldi adhesive, nevertheless an exceptional
registered cover from this rare office, the first registered one
seen by this describer, registration not mentioned in

1874 (Sept 27): Envelope from Odessa via Galicia and Romania to
Tulcea, directed to Mytilini on the island of Lesbos, then under
Osman rule, bearing Arms 1866 5 kop. black & lilac and 10 kop.
brown & blue (2), all on horizotally laid paper, tied by loght
ODESSA cds in black, the 5 kop. adhesive tied in addition by
Russian OPLATSHENO in circle, oval Austrian RUSSIE alongside.
Transit backstamps of PODWOLOCZYSK (Oct 10) at the border to
Austrian Galicia, ITZKANY at the border to Romania and "TULTSCHA
14/10" (Tchilinghirian fig. 838) show the exceptional routing to
bring this cover on a Lloyd vessel to the Aegean. '15' kreuzer rate
noted on obverse in red crayon. Some toning, the reverse full of
Greek handwriting, nevertheless a most interesting item full of
postal history, the long inland routing chosen presumably to the
lack of on the spot shipmail connections from Odessa to
Constantinople. Provenance: Collection Cihangir, Corinphila sale

h. ultramarine, tied the next day by another type of Romanian
TULCEA datestamp. At one time point or another the franking was
marked as invalid but not signs of Romanian or Austrian taxation

Constantinople, endorsed "par Vienne & de la 1er courrier soit sur
le Danube soit par Trieste", struck on front by LIEGE despatch cds
in red and framed "BELG: 1er R:" in green (van der Linden 560) to
indicate the first Belgian rayon to Prussia, on reverse Prussian
"AUS BELGIEN PER AACHEN 7 / 8" datestamp and in total five
different Prussian T.P.O.'s to document the cover's journey from
Aachen to Myslowitz, PESTH transit (Aug 9) cds. Undocumented is the
further journey from Pest to Galatz with the DDSG and further with
Lloyd to Constantinople. Total taxation of 2 (pi) / 20 (pa) to be
paid by the receiver. File folds, nevertheless an early item from

handstruck "VIA KUSTENDGE & VIENNA" handstamp in blue
(Tchilinghirian fig 113), 1864 Kustendje to Bucharest, 1864 to
Ruschuk bearing pair 1863 Arms 10 s. blue and struck by "VIA
KUSTENDGE & VIENNA" handstamp in black, 1864 from Manchester, 1864
to Vienna bearing Arms 1863 5 s. & pair 15 s., 1866 registered
front to Penzing with pair Arms 1864 15 s. brown, and 1867 to
Styria and not sent via the new Varna railway line. In mixed

front from Kustendje to Orebich, Dalmatia, bearing a combination
franking of 1864 Arms 15 s. brown and DBSR 20 pa. black on green,
tied by clear strike of "LLOYD AGENZIE KUSTENDJE" cds in black
(Tchilinghirian fig. 844). A fine and fresh combination item,
signed A. Diena & Colla; cert. Goller (2026). Note: In 1864 the
Danube and Black Sea Railway was founded and extended a distance of
46 miles between Kustendje, on the Black Sea, and Czernavoda on the
Danube, thus forming a link between the mail boats of the DDSG at
Czernavoda and the mail boats of the Austrian Lloyd Company at
Kustendje. This local post officially begun its activity in 1867
following a convention concluded between DBSR and Kustendje Harbor
Company (enterprise working in Constanta harbour) regarding the
transport of mail on DBSR railway, when the company put in use the
stamp of 20 paras. Covers to Austria without DBSR stamp are known
until July 24, 1867. Thus, this cover must be from 1868. Reference:
