Austrian Post Offices in Bulgaria, Ruschuk, Obliteration of French adhesives 1861 (June 15): Entire letter written in Tirnovo and erroneously datelined "Tirnova 16 Juin 1861", bearing France Napolèon
imperforated 10 c. bistre, shaved at top and a right marginal but defective example of 40 c. orange, the cover presumably intended to be sent with the French postal services but finally despatched at the Austrian post office in
Ruschuck and directed to Annonay, the French adhesives tied by clear Austrian "RUSTSCHUK 15 / 6" cds in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 876). WIEN transit backstamp (June 19), French STRASBOURG entry cds (June 22), French ambulant and
ANNONAY arrival (June 24). Taxed in Austria with '40 x' (Kreuzer) in manuscript, also handled in France as fully unpaid and taxed with handstruck '10' (décimes). Signed Calves and accompanied by the extensive writeup of Prof.
Vodrazka; cert. Goller (2026). Note: The text states that this cover was given to two persons on route to Bucharest which makes the franking with French adhesives by the sender difficult to understand as there was no French office
on this way. To speed up the transport the cover was therefore given to the first Austrian office in Ruschuk and made its way upstream to Vienna. Reference: Collection Cihangir; Corinphila sale 123 (Oct 2000), lot 2819. (Image 1)
