maritime hand-stamp “(D)AMPFSCHIFF” (applied to mail posted on

299 cover imageAustria–Hungary Maritime Mail Ungaro-Croata Shipping Company
Formative Period 1905: A specialised and research-oriented study of
early maritime postal development prior to the introduction of full
travelling post office datestamps, mounted on ten exhibition pages
and comprising fourteen covers and postcards. The collection
documents shipborne mail during the company’s formative years,
illustrating early handling procedures, port applications, and
maritime-related cachets used on coastal and incoming
correspondence. Included are examples of mail posted aboard
unidentified vessels, early Fiume harbour treatments, and
straight-line maritime instructional markings associated with
sea-borne mail. The section also incorporates examples of boxed
“PAQUETBOT” handstamps in differing formats, demonstrating the
application of international maritime mail conventions within the
Adriatic service. These items provide comparative insight into the
use of both smaller and larger format cachets during the pre-TPO
period. Presented in structured exhibition format, the material
highlights transitional postal practices between simple port
cancellation and the later adoption of ship-specific datestamps,
offering a cohesive overview of early Ungaro-Croata maritime
operations. A compact yet scholarly foundation study of the
company’s formative maritime postal history. Condition generally
fine for period, with minor faults consistent with commercial
maritime usage. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10) (Image 11) (Image 12) (Image 13) (Image 14) (Image 15) (Image 16) (Image 17)

Travelling Post Offices 1905–1914: A substantial and
well-structured exhibition study of the Ungaro-Croata Company’s
maritime travelling post office operations, mounted on thirty-three
exhibition pages and comprising 52 postcards and covers. The
collection documents the fully developed named-ship period
following the introduction of travelling post office datestamps,
illustrating circular ship cancellations incorporating vessel
names, together with shipboard service cachets and maritime routing
markings. Numerous vessels from the company’s fleet are
represented, providing comparative examples of differing datestamp
formats, lettering styles, and usage patterns across the pre-war
decade. The material reflects operational routes along the
Fiume–Cattaro coastal service and associated Adriatic lines, with
commercial mail to both domestic and foreign destinations. The
breadth of fleet representation offers a valuable overview of
shipboard postal administration during the mature phase of
Austro-Hungarian maritime mail handling prior to the First World
War. Presented in coherent exhibition format, the section
demonstrates consistency of study, route development, and ship
identification across a wide range of vessels, forming a
significant and research-driven holding from the peak TPO era of
the Ungaro-Croata service. Condition generally fine for the period,
with usual minor corner wear or light toning consistent with
commercial maritime postcards. Provenance: Ex John Pitts.
