DDSG Agencies in Russia, Odessa 1876ca (March): Part letter from Odessa to Galatz, bearing DDSG 1867 10 kr. green type I (corner fault), tied by faint oval ODESSA datestamp in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 834),
later a bold strike of the ship's canceller "METTERNICH / 2" in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 297), reverse with Romanian "GALATI 10 MAR. 76" arrival cds, the cover taxed with '20' bani in red crayon. One backflap and sideflaps missing,
nevertheless a most interesting cover full of postal history. Note: Until the end of 1870, the usage of DDSG adhesives on Russian ground was tolerated, twelve of the 16 covers in the describer's census are from this first period,
primarily directed to Ibraila. However there are four late usages from the years 1871 - 1877 including this one, all directed to different receivers in Galatz, where DDSG adhesives were used in contrary to the agreements between the
DDSG and Russia. Interestingly, on three of these four covers, the ODESSA datestamp was applied only 'nominally' as if to hide the place of despatch, all three were lateron tied in addition by bold strikes of the METTERNICH and
"PROPELLER GIURGEVO" ship's cancellers. (Image 1)
