539 cover imageDDSG Agencies in the Dobrudja, Sulina 1873 (June 29): Entire letter

tied by SULINA datestamp in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 856), GALATI
and WIEN transit as well as TRIEST arrival backstamps in black.
Rarity: The describer's census lists only 10 covers including this
one with this DDSG datestamp used between May and August 1873. (Image 1) (Image 2)

540 cover imageDDSG Agencies in the Dobrudja, Tulcea 1859 (Nov 1): Entire letter
written in Atmagea, 40 km south of Tulcea in the Dobrudja,
despatched and fully prepaid there, directed to Berlin, struck by
clear circular "TULCIA 9 / 11" datestamp in blue (unlisted in
Tchilinghirian), FRANCO handstamp in the same ink alongside, GALATZ
transit backstamp in blue from the next day. Reverse shows the
prepayment of '35' soldi, noted in manuscript. Note: An enigmatic
cancellation from Tulcea with the Consular office using the German
placename TULTSCHA in its datestamps and Arab numerals for the
month while the DDSG office used the Italian placename TULCIA and
Roman numerals for the month. This combination of TULCIA and Arab
numerals does therefore not fit in this scheme. Provenance:

541 cover imageDDSG Agencies in the Dobrudja, in transit through Tulcea 1860ca
(March 22): Lettersheet from Cattaro / Kotor, Montenegro and
directed to Sulina, endorsed "Via Corfu e Costantinopoli", struck
by two-line "CATTARO / 22 MARo" despatch cds, Zara, TRIEST & GALATZ
backstamps in transit as well as "TULCIA 8 / 4" cds in blue
(unlisted in Tchilinghirian), no arrival backstamp. In spite of its
endorsement not sent via Constantinople but along the Danube. The
manuscript " 15-20-10" taxation in red crayon on front but
obviously from two hands is difficult to understand as 15 soldi for
Austria and 20 soldi for the Levant would have been sufficient.

544 cover imageDDSG Agencies in Russia, Odessa 1876ca (March): Part letter from
Odessa to Galatz, bearing DDSG 1867 10 kr. green type I (corner
fault), tied by faint oval ODESSA datestamp in blue (Tchilinghirian
fig. 834), later a bold strike of the ship's canceller "METTERNICH
/ 2" in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 297), reverse with Romanian
"GALATI 10 MAR. 76" arrival cds, the cover taxed with '20' bani in
red crayon. One backflap and sideflaps missing, nevertheless a most
interesting cover full of postal history. Note: Until the end of
1870, the usage of DDSG adhesives on Russian ground was tolerated,
twelve of the 16 covers in the describer's census are from this
first period, primarily directed to Ibraila. However there are four
late usages from the years 1871 - 1877 including this one, all
directed to different receivers in Galatz, where DDSG adhesives
were used in contrary to the agreements between the DDSG and
Russia. Interestingly, on three of these four covers, the ODESSA
datestamp was applied only 'nominally' as if to hide the place of
despatch, all three were lateron tied in addition by bold strikes
of the METTERNICH and "PROPELLER GIURGEVO" ship's cancellers. (Image 1) (Image 2)

postal card 3 kop. rose from Odessa to Munich, the imprinted stamp
cancelled by ODESSA border office cds, struck at lower left with
elusive unframed "K.K. PRIV. / DONAU-DAMPFSCHIFFAHRT / GESELLSCHAFT

OKT. 97" (Tchilinghirian fig. 833), MÜNCHEN arrival (Oct 19) and
postman's cachet '90' alongside. Here used as a sender's marking,
the only usage of this extremely rare datestamp on cover known to
the describer. Cert. Goller (2026). Note: The text tells, that the
Odessa - Galatz route is still navigable. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

somewhat toned, endorsed "von der Agentie Dalija", a DDSG agency at
the Danube in Croatia between Vukovar and Apatin, adressed to the
DDSG administration in Pest and thus carried without rate markings,
struck with oval "Franz Josef / 7" handstamp in black

being the template for the figure in Tchilinghirian. Reference:

from Galatz to Ibraila, bearing 10 kr. green in type I, tied by
light Trip Number 2 boxed handstamp "9/VI 2. Reise" in blue
(Tchilinghirian fig. 322/323). A scarce shipmail cancellation on a
fresh and fine entire, signed Holcombe. Note: The 'Reise' Trip
Number datestamps may have been used on the propeller boats
'Giurgevo' and 'Sulina'. This was a shuttle service from Romanian
grain loading ports on the lower Danube. Whilst the handstamps are
found on DDSG covers, largely during 1870, they were in use on the
Parcel stamps for a few more years, probably until 1875.
