526 cover imageDDSG Agencies in Romania, Galatz 1844 (April 21): Entire letter
from Galatz to Constantinople, struck by "D.D.S.G. / P. P. /
GALATZ" handstamp in brownish black (Tchilinghirian fig. 808). A
very scarce handstamp on cover from the well-known Zafiropulo
correspondence, cover with vertical file fold well away from the
strike. Note: Tchilinghirian & Stephens mention that this handstamp
was probably manufactured in Constantinople for fully prepaid
covers with markings existing only for the offices in
Constantinople, Galatz, Ibraila and Varna, starting in August 1844.
The Lloyd Agency and Consular Office only opened in September 1845
and took over the the deep water services from the DDSG which
restricted its services to the Danube and the route to Odessa. This
postmark can be found up to 1865, even as an obliterator on DDSG
adhesives. (Image 1) (Image 2)

(Tchilinghrian fig. 748) alongside, indistinct WIEN arrival
backstamp in red. Taxed with 15 soldi for each the Levant and
Austria, horizontal filing fold, nevertheless an ideal presentation
of the DDSG Agentie handstamp which may have simply had the
function of a company cachet without any postal function. (Image 1) (Image 2)

bearing DDSG 1867 10 kr. green type I, tied by a superb strike of
the oval "GURA-WAI 2/7" datestamp in blue (Tchilinghirian fig 776).
Cert. Goller (2026). Note: Guravoja or Gura Văii was the first
village on Wallachian ground at the Romanian end of the Iron Gates
defile. This outpost should normally have been the frontier
check-post for ships entering the Principalities, but was
presumably too small for this purpose, as Customs and Passport
formalities took place at Turnu Severin, about six miles
downstream. The low importance of this locality is reflected in the
fact that only one single example of a marking is known until
today, the one offered here. Reference: Dispayed and discussed in

rarely thereafter as in these two cases. (Image 1)

the upper row of adhesives in addition with handwritten
"Dampfschiff-Agentie", WIEN arrival backstamp in black (Sept 9).

536 cover imageDDSG Agency in Southern Bessarabia under Romanian control, Ismail
1867 (July 27): Entire letter from Ismail to Ibraila, bearing 1867
17 kr. scarlet perf. 12, a fresh erxample tied by superb "ISMAIL 27
/ VII" datestamp of the DDSG office in blue (Tchilinghirian fig.
816), oval "GALAZ 27/7" datestamp alongside. Cover cleaned and
stamp detached and re-positioned, horizontal bend through the lower
part of the adhesive ironed, just mentioned for accuracy and not
distracting at all from the rarity and attractiveness of this
famous cover, possibly unique, displayed and discussed in
Tchilinghirian part 6 on page 477 with this strike being the
template for figure 816. Cert. Goller (2026). Note: Ismail with the
southern part of Bessarabia became part of Romnia after the Crimean
War until it was reverted to Russia after the Russo-Turkish War of
1877/78 and a Romanian office was active there during this period.
Due to this and as Ismail is located on the northern arm of the
Danube estuary with little shipping traffic, activity of the DDSG
is extremely rare. Provenance: Collection Steindler, Robson Lowe
