4591 **/*/bof/(*) image1930 (15 Sept): Lakatoi “AIR MAIL” carmine overprint on 3 d.
turquoise, Ash printing, extensive specialised study of almost
exclusively unused material, mounted on eleven album pages,
including a complete pane of forty, together with imprint block of
fifteen, four imprint strips of three (one used) and four blocks of
four, in addition to singles arranged by identified plate
positions. The study illustrates different printings and positional
characteristics, with numerous pieces retained in marginal
positions showing the JOHN ASH imprint, allowing reconstruction of
portions of the sheet. Several constant varieties and plate
characteristics are represented, including examples of the “Rift”
flaws, as well as misplaced and irregular overprint impressions.
The pane and multiples provide a particularly useful reference for
the setting of the overprint across the sheet. Additionally
included is one page of SG113 with black “AIR MAIL” overprint,
together with four further pages of related Lakatoi material,
including Cooke printings and shades (SG98) and SG85/92 showing
plate flaws, forming a useful comparative reference group for the
issue. A carefully assembled and highly instructive specialised
study in mainly fresh and fine condition, with large part og. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10) (Image 11) (Image 12) (Image 13) (Image 14) (Image 15)

transient flaws, represented across multiple denominations, papers
and overprint settings. The page comprises twelve examples (8
unused) SG9 (½ d., vertical wmk., damaged right-hand leaves), SG2
(1 d., double impression on right-hand value tablet), SG10 (1 d.,
deformed “P” on right-hand value tablet), SG12 (2½ d. thick paper,
.042, Royal Blue shade), SG3 (2 d., horizontal wmk., “Legless Boat
People”), SG11 (2 d., inking flaw with over-inking of frame), SG41
(2½ d. Small “Papua”, double frame “kiss print”), SG4 (frame ink
flaw), SG4 (horizontal wmk., 30mm setting not 28mm), SG23 (2 d.
large “Papua”, double dot to “A” of Papua), SG2 (horizontal wmk.,
line through sail), and SG5 (4 d., line through sail). The assembly
illustrates a range of production varieties, including true double
impressions (“kiss prints”), constant plate flaws, over-inking and
transient inking anomalies, as well as watermark and setting
differences. Collectively the material demonstrates the interaction
between keyplate and duty plate, press pressure irregularities, and
overprint setting characteristics across both British New Guinea
and subsequent Papua issues. Fresh colours and fine to very fine
throughout, neatly arranged as a comparative technical study,
unused examples mostly with original gum, the odd fault (SG2 has
small tear). Overall fine and an interesting and useful page. (Image 1)

pages, comprising a selection of twenty unused examples and a used
block of four, illustrating the principal overprint types, paper
varieties and positional flaws of the early Papua overprinted
issues. The study includes a range of denominations from the ½ d.
to 2 s. 6 d. values, showing the early “Papua” overprints, with
examples printed on thin, medium and thick papers, together with
both line and comb perforations. Several examples demonstrate
differences in watermark orientation, paper thickness and
impression quality, illustrating the production variations of the
Port Moresby overprinting period. Included are several positional
and overprint varieties, notably the SG21 positional flaw “Dot in
first P of Papua” (position 8), recognised as the only constant
overprint flaw recorded in the Large Papua overprint series and
occurring only on the ½ d. value. Additional material illustrates
overprint irregularities such as raised or distorted letters,
double impressions and misplaced overprints, together with examples
showing double printed overprints and “kiss” prints. The group
includes two forgeries, 6 d. with a repainted overprint (SG26
Ceremuga certificate confirming alteration) and 2½ d. horizontal
pair positions 19/20 thick paper not genuine despite BPA
certificate of authenticity (SG35b), as well as a Stamp Duty
overprinted strip of three illustrating positional dots after
“Duty”, providing additional insight into the typographic setting
of the overprints. A well-organised and instructive reference study
