c. black, a used example (Robson Lowe type sheet 3) on 1927 flown
cover addressed to Hull, England tied by "St. Johns N'fld" machine
cancel (MAY 20 / 10 AM) with "TREPASSEY" datestamp below (May 21)
in black. The envelope with imprint of the firm employed to do the
overprinting "Robinson & Company, Ltd., Duckworth Street, St.
John's" (for a very similar cover see the Robson Lowe Encyclopædia,
Volume V, page 503) and Rome slogan machine transit on reverse
(June 22). The cover with opening tears at top and file fold well
away from the adhesive, but with original content on Robinson & Co.
headed paper with manuscript "Pinedo's air flight" and signed by

4700 cover image1930 (Sept 25): "Columbia" surcharged 50 c. on 36 c. sage-green, a
used example, position 1 on the setting of four subjects, on 1930
cover to England tied by "St. Johns, N'fld" machine cancel (SEP 25
/ 11.30 AM) in black. Reverse with "Harbour Grace" cds (Oct 9).
Fresh and very fine, of the 100 known used stamps, just 70 were
carried in this fashion. Rare. Signed Herbert Bloch, Peter
Holcombe. Certs. BPA (1933) & Holcombe (1993). Note: The Bellanca
monoplane "Miss Columbia" arrived at Harbour Grace on 22 Sept 1930.
The pilot was captain Errol Boyd of the R.C.A.F. and his navigator
Lieut. Harry Connor of the US Navy. The plane took off on 9 October
and was forced down in the Scilly Isles, where it refuelled,
reaching Croydon Airport on the 11 Oct 1930. Provenance: Corinphia
