non-stop flight across the Atlantic. The flight commenced on the afternoon of 18 May 1919. After many problems Hawker decided to ditch in the sea west of the Azores and he and Grieve were rescued by the Danish ship "Mary" which had
no radio telephone and thus they were initially feared lost. The Aeroplane "Atlantic" and its precious bag of mail were salvaged by the "S.S. Lake Charlottesville" on 23 May 1919. Note 2: 200 stamps were overprinted: 95 stamps
were used on letters, 18 were damaged and destroyed, 11 were given as presentation copies and the remaining 76 were sold in the aid of the Marine Disasters Fund. (Image 1)
