1875: 30 s. violet, syllabic 4, a used example, marginal from base of the sheet, on 1884 cover with imprinted "HMS Vanadis" on reverse, addressed to Stockholm, Sweden and endorsed "via San Francisco" at base
tierd by obliterator in blac and by YOKOHAMA despatch cds (Sept 14) in black. Reverse with New York cds (Oct 7) and two Stockholm arrival datestamps (Oct 19) in black. The envelope with restoreable closed tear at top left, well away
from the fine adhesive. Rare and most unusual. Note: HMS Vanadis was a steam frigate of the Swedish Navy, launched in 1862. She was the only steam frigate constructed for the Swedish Navy. During the date of this cover Vanadis was
on a scientific circumnavigation of the Earth (1883-1885), known as the Vanadis expedition. The steamer arrived in Japan after three weeks at sea from the Marshall Islands, the Vanadis underwent repairs in Yokohama and the senior members of the party had a meeting with Emperor Meiji. (Image 1)
