Ecuador
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
651 cover image1845 (17 July): Entire letter from Rioverde to Esmeraldas, carried
by private ship, bearing a very fine strike of a small circular
intaglio “sailing ship” marking in black, struck centrally on the
outer letter sheet. The folded entire with clear manuscript address
and well-preserved internal contents, dated “Rioverde a 17 de Julio
de 1845,” the text of a commercial nature, referring to illness and
to consignments of goods, providing an engaging insight into local
trade and correspondence of the period; showing only light age
toning consistent with its journey and age. A rare and distinctive
maritime marking of primitive character, applied to mail carried
outside the formal postal system and conveyed by coastal and
riverine transport over the short route (circa 40 km) between the
two ports. The strike, being well-defined and centrally placed,
greatly enhances the visual appeal. A most attractive and
historically significant maritime entire, representing an
exceptional example of private ship carriage in early Ecuadorian
postal history. Rare; one of only two recorded examples. Cert.
Moorhouse (2012). (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
