6267 cover imageSkeleton Issue 1878: Shahi yellow-brown, position 15, a used
example on reverse of India ½ a. blue postal stationery envelope,
with contents, mailed from Chardeh (some 100 miles West of Kabul)
to Peshawar cancelled by diamond cut on despatch. The cover was
passed to the Indian Civil P.O. and the indicia was cancelled at
"DHAKA" in transit (Khyber Pass) with Peshawar arrival cds below
(June 17). A rare combination usage from an obscure town. Note: The
cover translation reads: "To Peshawar City to the hand of Mian Ali
Baksh and Ahmed Khel, this letter from Chardeh was received at the
British Post Office and was forwarded to Peshawar". Provenance:
Collection Major Adrian E. Hopkins MC., Robson Lowe, 19 May 1988,

6268 cover imageSkeleton' Issue 1878 (Dated 95): Kabul issue covers (4), Shahi
greenish-brown, position 23 on vertically laid paper, a used
example on 1878 cover to Amritsar cancelled by small knife clip and
by "Peshawar" cds (Oct 19) in black. Unpaid for onward transmission
and charged with framed "Postage Due / Anna" handstamp on arrival
in Amritsar (Oct 21); together with two similar covers to Dera
Ismail Khan bearing Kabul greenish-brown, one with position 19, the
other with position 38 cancelled by clip or bite and both cancelled
by Peshawar arrival cds; and an extraordinary cover - allegedly ex
Ferrari de la Renotière - bearing vertical pair of "black fakes"
position 34/39, also on cover to Dera Ismail Khan. Generally fine,
a scarce and interesting group. Provenance: R.A. Siegel, New York,

6271 cover imageAbdur Rahman Issue 1880/90 (Dated 1298): Watercolour Abasi purple
on white, a cut-round example used on reverse of 1885 cover from
the recently opened Post office in Kandahar to Quetta, British
India cancelled initially by pen-stroke and also tied by barred "F.
No. 1" Field Post Office No. 1 (Proud K1) obliterator in black. The
Mail was exchanged with the Indian P.O. at "Gulistan-Karez" with
circular datestamp in black (March 13) which at the time was the
Railhead on the Sind - Pishin Railway, which was being extended to
Chaman as a Military measure (not Public Works) so Field Post
Offices were therefore provided for use by both Military and
Civilian personnel. Framed "Postage Due / Anna" handstamp applied
with Quetta (Baluchistan) arrival cds (March 20) at left. Faults to
envelope as to be expected but of great rarity - one of just three
covers recorded on the Southbound route at this period. Provenance:
Collection Gerald Sattin, Spink, London, 14 July 1999, lot 229. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

buff postal stationery card from Kabul (March 22, 1882) to Peshawar
cancelled by manuscript pen crosses and by Peshawar arrival cds
(March 31) with further strike on the indicia, framed "POSTAGE DUE
/ ½ ANNA" at base in black. The card with message declaring a
parcel had safely arrived, the card itself taking nine days from
writing to receipt. Splendid and very rare usage and without doubt
one of the most attractive covers of the issue. Provenance: Stanley
