orange postal stationery envelope used from Lieut. D. de Lacy Passy
to France cancelled by "FIELD P.O. / No. 10" thimble datestamp
(June 2) in black and reverse with Bombay cds, Sea Post Office B
cds (June 16), Modane-Paris in red and arrival datestamps (July 6);
and India 1½ a. blue postal stationery card used (July 22) from
Lieut. C.E. Baddeley of the Bombay Sappers & Miners at Camp Nigardi
/ Nizanli to Cheltenham, Glos., cancelled by "FIELD P.O. / No. 12"
cds in black and thence via Bombay. A scarce and generally fine
pair. Note: Early in 1885, 25'000 troops with 20'000 camp followers
were assembled in Baluchistan in the face of a threat of a Russian
advance on the western Afghanistan town of Herat. The Pishin Force
Frontier Office was opened as a Head P.O. at Rindli and within a
few weeks further Field Post Offices were opened. Provenance:

postmark in lieu of postage stamps - an outstanding group of covers
(11) including 1903 internal covers from Kandahar (2) to Peshawar
with 'batila' in purple denoting payment; further usages with three
covers from Kandahar to Quetta with 'batila' in purple and sent to
Karachi where charged on arrival, 1903/04 covers (3) from Kandahar
to Quetta with 'batila' in purple and India ½ a. green tied by
Chaman cds with Kilh-abdulla cds adjacent; and 1906 provisional
usages on internal covers (2) with the 'batila' struck in

acclaimed. This matter to be reported to the Govt. for necessary
action"; second cover from "Hok by Rejai" without postal markings
also franked (-) Official on reverse with mis-perforation variety,
with manuscript "This despatch to reach the column and be delivered
to the Commander" and further endorsed "The people of Khosti have
made headway towards India but are not in agreement" and third
cover with (-) red tied by negative seal "Field Post Office" in
black from Mohammed Osman, Military Commander, Detmar. Scarce

strip of five (positions 2/5/8/11/14) showing the 'worn state' with
a vertical white line to the right of the Lion's head running
through the entire stamp and position 11 showing 'worn state' wear
to Lion's face and weakened ornaments at lower right; and the Shahi
values (positions 3/6/9/12/15) showing single used examples (pos. 3
also showing the 'worn state'), three being cancelled by bites. A
fine reconstruction with the unused strips of considerable scarcity
