6090 cover image2nd Afghan War - Kabul Field Force 1880 (July 17): Soldier's letter
from Pezwan to Drogheda, Ireland from a Private J. Rogers in the
1st Batallion, 25th regiment, King's Own Borderers, countersigned
at lower left by Commanding Officer at Camp Pezwan, bearing India
1865 8 p. mauve and 1 a. chocolate tied by barred "I" obliterators
in black. Reverse with sadly overstruck but very rare PEZWAN cds
(July 17) in black and Drogheda arrival (Aug 14): A rare usage -
Pezwan is some 70 miles from Kabul on the way to Gandamak. The Post
Office was only open from March to August 1880. Note: The 25th
marched under Capt. Dixon to Safed Sang to Pezwan in early April
1880, covering the rearguard of the final withdrawal in August
1880. During June and July the Batallion did full service in
temperatures of up to 115° in the shade. Provenance: Collection

and Abergele arrival (Aug 23). Interesting letter from Capt. H.M.
Sandbach from Ishtalif, North West of Kabul "Abdul Rahman says he
will accept our terms...he is at Charikar about 25 miles from
here...he will not come to Kabul before we leave...The forts round
Kabul and parts of Sherpur are all ready to be blown up the instant

6092 cover/bof image2nd Afghan War - Kabul 1880 (Aug 6): India 1865 1 a. choclate in a
vertical pair and 1878 4 a. blue-green in a block of four, used on
cover from Kabul to Dublin, all tied by square barred obliterators
in black. Reverse with "CABUL" cds (Aug 5), Bombay transit cds (Aug
14) and "H&K PACT" cds (Sept 4). Faults due to size of the
envelope but the highest recorded franking from the 2nd.

with "W.H. SMITH & SON / 186 STRAND, LONDON" advertising ring, used
to the Officer's Mess, 67th Regt., Rawalpindi, India; two
Rawalpindi cds's (Aug 8) in black; reverse with REDIRECTED
handstamp in black and sent on to Kabul. Scarce usage. Note: The
67th Regiment left Kabul for India in August 12, 1880 and thus this

Cover from Lieut. Cowan, Orderly Officer to Major-General Hills at
Peshawar to Sidmouth, franked by India 1865 1 a. chocolate in a
block of four and single1873 ½ a. blue tied by "K" in bars
obliterator. Reverse with "KHYBER SORTING" cds (Aug 30), Bombay cds
and Sidmouth (Sept 25) arrival. Part flap missing and file fold
crosses the adhesives but an attractive usage. Note: The new Amir
of Afghanistan was installed in Kabul on 11 August 1880 and the
British troops in Northern Afghanistan were withdrawn through the

blue postal stationery envelope up-rated with 1878 4 a. blue-green
used from Kandahar to Cavan, Ireland tied by sqaure barred
obliterator in black and by manuscript "Kandahar 2.9.80". Reverse,
top flap missing, with "CANDHAR" cds in black, Bombay cds (Sept 18)
and Cavan arrival (Oct 6). Note: The day prior to the sending of
this letter, General Roberts had defeated Ayub Khan's force at the
Battle of Mazra / Kandahar. The writer, Capt. G.C. Dobbs of the
Bombay Staff Corps serving with the commissariat Dept., had been

6096 cover image2nd Afghan War - Kandahar Field Force 1880 (Sept 3): Cover from
Lieut. Colonel C.M. Griffith, 1st. Bombay Native Infantry
(Grenadiers) to his wife in Boulogne, France bearing India 1873 ½
a. blue and 4 a. blue-green tied by squared bars obliterator in
black. The cover struck with circular "T" marlking and found to be
double weight upon arrival and charged "4" décimes to pay. Reverse
with "CANDHAR" cds (Sept 3), with Bombay cds (Sept 18) and "Sea
Post Office / A" cds of same day; and Paris-Calais TPO dated Oct
5th. A fine and unusual cover - see note below. Note: Lieut.
Colonel C.M. Griffith was one of just three British Officers to
survive the Battle of Maiwand uninjured, two days prior to sending
this letter he had fought with General Roberts at the defeat of
Ayub Khan's force at the Battle of Mazra / Kandahar and was
mentioned in dispatches. Provenance: Cavendish, Derby, 25 May 2002,

6097 cover image2nd Afghan War - Kurrum Valley Field Force 1880 (Oct 6): India 1 a.
brown postal stationery envelope sent as Soldier's Letter to
London, endorsed from a Corporal in the 8th Co. Sappers & Miners,
up-rated with 1865 8 p. mauve cancelled by "F No. 9" Field Post
Office obliterator; backstamped with fine and rare "SHALOZAN" cds
of despatch in black (Oct 6) and reverse with Bombay cds (Oct
14),and London arrival (Nov 14). Rare and spectacular usage - the
latest recorded date of use and the sole usage from Shalozan. Note
1: Shalozan was the last post held during the withdrawal to India.
On October 16 Kurrum Fort was handed over to the Afghans. Note 2:
The Soldier's Rate was 1 anna 9 pies. to Great Britain via
Brindisi. 8 pies stamps were accepted as, and sold for, 9 pies.

for an Inland Money Order for a Transfer of 14 Rupees and 14 annas
from Major Campbell, commanding a detachment of the 1st Bengal
Cavalry and based at Togh, near Kohat; the transfer made to
Allahabad, struck with fine curved "FIELD FORCE. P.O." cds in black
(April 2). Scarce and unusual. (Image 1)

6099 cover image2nd Afghan War - Withdrawal from Kandahar 1881 (Jan 24): India 1½
a. blue postal stationery card used from Kandahar to Bracknell,
cancelled by bold strike of square bars obliterator. Superb
"KANDAHAR" cds (Jan 24) below of despatch (this datestamp
introduced in 1881) with Bombay transit (Feb 3) above. Superb and
rare. Note: From Major W.R. Bunbury, Bengal Staff Corps, with note
on reverse "The Brigade has just gone out to Maiwand" - the scene
of the British defeat of the previous year (27 July 1880). The
British held on to Kandahar until the summer of 1881 when they
withdrew, retaining only the districts of Sibi and Pishin which had
been ceded in the Treaty of Gandamak. Provenance: Spink, London, 5

black. Manuscript notation of receipt (Feb 14), with reverse
showing fine red crest of the 22nd Bombay Native Infantry.

two addressed to Mrs. Roberts, wife of Colonel F.S. Roberts (later
General Sir Frederick Roberts VC.), Commanding Station, Jhelum, at
single and double rates with India 1873 ½ a. blue single and the
second with ½ a. blue pair, each tied in manuscript and by barred
obliterator with "FIELD FORCE. P.O." circular datestamps on reverse
(Proud type D1) in black (dated 19 Dec and 9 Jan respectively);
together with a note in Colonel Roberts' handwriting and signed
with somewhat defective cover, and a 1903 printed letter from the
War Office with a secretary acknowledging receipt of a letter to
Field Marshall Lord Roberts. Provenance: Earliest cover: collection

to equip the Anglo-Russian Boundary Commission for Northern

Hussars who drowned in the Kabul River (31 March 1879) and an
earlier letter from George to his brother Bill written in 1874 from
Muttra and an 1896 cover and contents regarding Skevington from the
War Office in London; printed "Special Supplemnt to the Bombay
Review and Indian Advertiser" of 6 September 1879 discussing the
Mutiny by Afghan troops, reduced photograph of the "Times of India"
with news from Afghanistan etc.; postcards from the 1908 Mohmand
Expedition showing the Khyber Pass, Jamrud Fort, Landikotal etc.

6106 cover imageThe Imperial Durbar 1885: India ¼ a. blue postal stationery card
mailed from Umballa to the Officier Commanding the Royal Irish
regiment in Rawalpindi, cancelled by Umballa cds (March 28) and
struck upon arrival with fine strike of the special "FIELD POST
OFFICE / IMPERIAL / DURBAR / MAR 30" barred duplex on arrival in
black. Slightest toning but rare. Note: Abdur Rahman, Amir of
Afghanistan was invited by Lord Dufferin, Viceroy of India to an
Imperial Durbar at Rawalpindi on 31 March 1885. Also attending were
the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, the ruling Punjab chiefs and the
high Officers of the Indian Government, together with the author
Rudyard Kipling. The Durbar was cut short on news of a Russian
incursion on Afghanistan in the Herat region. Provenance:
