6053 cover image2nd Afghan War - Kandahar Field Force 1879 (Jan 29): Cover probably
from Kandahar to London franked by India 1865 2 a. orange single
and horizontal pair, initialled and dated in manuscript with light
strikes of square bars obliterators in black. Reverse with "Quetta"
cds (Feb 6), Sukkur Sorting Office cds (Feb 15), Bombay cds (Feb
24) and London arrival (March 15). It is likely that this letter
was written from Kandahar by a member of the small detachment left
there (see Note below), as the Quetta datestamp is struck some 8
days after the mailing. Note: It is most probable that this letter
was written during the initial occupation of Kandahar by General
Stewart's forces which occupied Kandahar in early January but began
running out of provisions almost immediately. The force was divided
into two Divisions: one going west to Girishk, the other North to
Khelat - their only duty being to forage for food. In winter in
hostile territory they were largely unsuccessful with the sick and
wounded dying and the hundreds of pack animals eaten or dying of
cold and starvation. By late February 1879 the Force, after
suffering great hardship, began to evacuate South-East to India.

charged at 1 anna + 4 annas registration. Rare, spectacular and
superb. Provenance: Collection Derek Hammond Giles, Spink, London,
