6028 cover image1st Afghan War - The Army of Retribution 1842 (April 24): Soldier's
concessionary rate letter from a private in the 31st Regiment,
written from Peshawar preparing to leave for Kabul, to Reading,
Berks., endorsed "From Thos. Knight, Pte. in 31st. Regiment" and
countersigned by the Major commanding; with oval "INDIA" in red and
handstruck "2" (pence) to pay upon receipt. Fascinating contents
"General Sale of the 13th Regiment with his brigade who have been
beseiged at Jelalabad these four months had an engagement with
Ack-Bar-Khan and his Army, who was the chief of the insurgents, and
Gen. Sale completely routed them with great slaughter and took all
their stores, ammunition and four large guns. Our Arms was only
1'600 and the enemy 15'000...". Despite faults, a rare and most
interesting cover from a very literate Private. Provenance:

6029 cover image1st Afghan War - to Lady Sale in captivity 1842 (May 10): Entire
letter from General Sale in Jelalabad to his wife, Lady Sale in
captivity at Zanduh, 10 miles South of Tezeen under Mohammed Akhbar
Khan, without postal markings as carried under Flag of Truce by
Capt. Colin Mackenzie. Contents state "I was disappointed at not
getting a note from you by McKenzie but as your forts are far
asunder it was hardly to be expected...I have received many letters
from all our children in the provinces...". On the reverse in faint
pencil, are notes for a pattern: "a pyjama about a yard long". The
measurements are in fingers so it was probably written whilst Lady
Sale was in captivity. Lady Sale had been taken hostage on the
retreat from Kabul, the hostages were eventually released on 20
September 1842 on the approach of General Pollock's Army. Historic
and very rare. Provenance: Collection Gerald Sattin, Harmers,
London, 18-20 May 1997, ex lot 1813; collection Horst Dietrich, DF,

Futtiabad three daya after the initial advance towards Kabul,
endorsed "Via Falmouth" and "Prepaid" at top, addressed to
Stratford on Avon. Struck on reverse with the earliest recorded

red with manuscript date "29 August 41" and "12 a." rate prepaid to
Bombay. Oval "INDIA" in red and London cds in red (Nov 14) and
Stratford on Avon cds (Nov 15) in black. Fascinating content
(transcript enclosed): "I finished my last letter...on my return to
Jelalabad from the bloody scene in the valley of Mazeena...on the
23rd (August) we made our first march on Cabul...(already) 50 men
have gone to hospital...from fever. The general feeling is we will
lose ⅓ of our men going and ⅔ coming back. Be that as it may we
cannot move without a very considerable loss...The last accounts we
heard of the prisoners was not so good...I am sadly afraid that our
advance will cause Akbar to murder them all...". Despite faults to
the entire, extraordinarily rare - not only the earliest strike of
the rare "AFIGHANISTAN / Paid" handstamp but also one of just two
known examples actually applied within Afghanistan, as all other
known strikes were applied at HQ to the East of Peshawar.

6037 cover image1st Afghan War - Reoccupation of Kabul 1842 (Oct 5): Entire letter
from Lieut. William Graham at Camp Cabool to Edinburgh, Scotland
endorsed "Overland by Falmouth" with reverse showing the only known
example of the "AFIGHANISTAN / Post Paid" handstamp in red struck
in Kabul (Oct 6) sadly in its usual watery state but nevertheless
unique thus, with oval "INDIA" in red on obverse and Edinburgh cds
and Berwick arrival (Jan 14, 1843). Truly wonderful letter
regarding the postal communications and not least on the release of
the prisoners held since the fall of Kabul (full transcript
accompanies) including "If this note reaches you which is doubtful
as the dak or mail between this and Jelalabad is closed by
robbers...having already plundered seven posts...we are not allowed
to send larger sheets...that the Dak parcel may be as small as
possible" and on the fighting "at a place called Tezeen the
principal chief of Afghanistan had assembled 16'000 men to oppose
our progress...I moved off with Major Skinner's party who had the
first of it..." and later: "the 19th Brigade was sent towards
Bamian under old Sale and returned with the prisoners....poor old
Sale's joy was gloriously depicted when he marched....alongside his
gallant Flo's (Lady Sale) palanquin..." and reports of the original
advance: "in marching from Gundamak to Cabool the sight along the
road is something horrible...between those places lie the bodies of
20'000 massacred human beings - in many places you could not keep
your horse from walking over them...". A fantastic entire within
which this short description cannot do full justice. Provenance:
