3380 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1898 (May 3): Cover from Shanghai, German Post Offices in China to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1889 Germany 20 pf. ultramarine neatly cancelled by a very fine Shanghai datestamp and prepaying 20 pf. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales. French packet mail datestamp on the front and on reverse, Colombo transit and Sydney arrival. Clean and attractive, with the Australian Colonies being a scarce destination for the German Post Offices in China. Route - French Steam Packet: Departed Shanghai 3 May 1898 to Colombo. Orient Line: Departed Colombo (19 May) per “Oruba” via Albany (2 June) and Adelaide (5 June) to Sydney, arriving 8 June 1898 (37 days). (Image 1) (Image 2)

Mit Einschreibezettel 'Smyrna Deutsche Post 306', adressiert an 'Cherif Osman Noury Bey' an eine Poste-Restante-Adresse in Berlin (Poste Principale), umadressiert nach St. Petersburg (rückseitiger Ankunftsstempel "16.10.2", nach julianischem Kalender). The first envelope, measuring 253 x 182 mm, is uprated with a 50 c. stamp (Gi 28) and addressed to Frankfurt, then redirected to Partenkirchen, with arrival and transit marks on the back. The second, measuring 292 x 152 mm, is uprated with a 1 p. stamp (Gi 31) and sent to a bank house address in Mannheim, arrival mark on the back. Scarce in such fine condition. (Image 1)

Very fine and a rare destination. The only recorded cover from the British Post Office in Gibraltar to the Australian Colonies. Route - P&O Line: Departed Gibraltar 5 Nov 1868 per “Ceylon” via Malta (9 Nov) to Alexandria (12 Nov); overland to Suez; “Simla” (15 Nov) to Galle (29 Nov); “Bombay” (1 Dec) via King Georges Sound (16 Dec) to Melbourne, arriving 22 Dec 1868 (49 days). Note: This cover is addressed to Hussey Burgh Macartney, the Reverend Dean of Melbourne, with this cover emanating from the famous Macartney family correspondence, a prolific inwards correspondence over three generations to the Australian Colonies, principally Melbourne. 3276 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1893 (Oct): Cover from Gibraltar to Queanbeyan, New South Wales bearing 1889 Gibraltar 25 c. ultramarine, a horizontal pair cancelled on arrival at Melbourne with the “1” obliterator, prepaying 50 centimos for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales. The stamps were uncancelled during transit to Melbourne where the scarce “LOOSE / SHIP LETTER” handstamp in black was applied, with Queanbeyan arrival datestamp on the reverse. Aside from a couple of covers from the early 1860’s, Gibraltar is a rare origin for mail to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed Gibraltar c21 Oct 1893 to Alexandria. P&O Line: Departed Alexandria (26 Oct) per “Oceana” via the Suez Canal, Aden (30 Oct) and King Georges Sound (15 Nov) to Adelaide, by rail via Melbourne (20 Nov) to Queanbeyan, arriving 22 Nov 1893 (34 days).
