650 cover image1840: Envelope with original letter datelined "off Sheerness, Monday night 19th" from Captain Huntley whilst travelling to take up his duties as Lt. Governor of the Settlements on the river Gambia, addressed to his brother in Gloucestershire, rated '1' in red, with London Paid tombstone dated 24 March 1840 also in red. To the reverse, a Deal cds black (20/3). A transcript accompanies the cover, the contents relating to family news. Light soiling and small portion of flap missing, otherwise fine and scarce. Reference: Captain Henry Vere Huntley was Colonial Governor of the Gambia from 10 April 1840 to 31 May 1841. He was knighted on his return and prior to taking up his appointment as Lt. 651 cover image1843: Large part of wrapper from Bathurst to London, dated 9 May 1843, sent from J. Lynn, rated '8' in red for half ounce to Britain. To the reverse a straight line 'SHIP-LETTER' in black, overstruck by a London arrival in red (27/6) and with additional transit notations in red ink. One side of flap missing and horizontal filing fold, otherwise fine. Note: J. Lynn was the Wesleyan schoolmaster in Bathurst. Reference: The Baptist Magazine, 1843, page 603. 652 cover image1845: Entire letter from John Robson, St. Marys, Gambia to Camelford, Cornwall, dated 20 January 1845, endorsed "p Sea Witch" top right, rated '8' in black for under half an ounce, with good strike of the step-type 'DEAL / SHIP LETTER' in black (Robertson S8). On reverse a circular London transit in red (28/2). The extensive letter includes reports that they are dispensing with the job of Harbour Master and that he was to be appointed Quarantine Master at £40 per annum. There is also reference to the formation of the new Fitzgerald Club. Note: The 'Sea Witch' was a tea / opium clipper sailing between England and China. 656 cover image1870: Envelope sent from Gambia to Paris, dated 11 February 1870, bearing fair strike of the 'A / GAMBIA' cds (Type 3) in red, alongside a part rate mark at top, with 'PD' circular and London Paid cds (24/2) in red and alongside a 'Angl. / Amb. Calais' double circle in black (24/2). To the reverse, Paris arrival in black (24/2). The envelope has been reduced at top and the wax seal to the flap has been removed. Scarce example. Additionally, comes with an 1879 envelope to London endorsed "per Congo SS" bearing a strike of 'Gambia / Paid' cds, rated '1/3' and with Liverpool Packet mark. Heavy vertical crease, quite fragile and with flaws, but an interesting and scarce UPU rate. A useful duo (2). (Image 1) (Image 2)
