1099 image1866/1950: Fine collection beginning with the first issue, featuring a good range of stamps, often duplicated, both unused and used. Many 20th century sets are included in both unused and used condition and also frequently duplicated, with the used stamps often bearing special event cancellations. The 1929 9th Birthday of Prince Farouk set, with the vignette in grey, is present in unused blocks of four (signed). The 1934 UPU set is included in used condition. The collection also contains covers and a fair quantity of sets on FDCs. 3250 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1874 (Nov 5): Cover from Cairo, Egypt to Melbourne, Victoria bearing 1872 Egypt 10 pa. mauve, 1 pi. red and 2 pi. yellow, each cancelled by the Cairo datestamps (Nov 2) and prepaying 3 pi. 10 pa. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Bold circular ‘P.D.” handstamp in black and with Suez British PO transit and Melbourne arrival datestamps. Cover faults, including a closed tear, however, an extremely rare destination for mail from from Egypt. Signed Todd AIEP. Route - P&O Line: Departed Alexandria 5 Nov 1874 per “Peshawur” via Suez (6 Nov) to Galle (20 Nov); “Ceylon” (21 Nov) via King Georges Sound (5 Dec) and Adelaide (11 Dec) to Melbourne, arriving 12 Dec 1874 (41 days). 3263 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1884 (May 22): Cover from Alexandria, Egypt to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1881 Egypt 10 pa. bluish grey, two examples and 1879 1 pi. rose, damaged on opening and 2 pi. orange, all cancelled by "Alexandrie / Station" datestamps and prepaying 3 pi. 20 pa. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales with Sydney arrival on reverse. A fine and attractive three colour franking to a rare destination from Egypt. Route - P&O Line: Departed Alexandria 22 May 1884 per “Deacon” via Aden (27 May) to Colombo (4 June); “Assam” (4 June) via King Georges Sound (16 June) and Adelaide (20 June) to Melbourne (22 June); by rail to Sydney, arriving 26 June 1884 (43 days). Note: Whilst 1884 may appear to be a late cover from Egypt to Australia, this cover is still one of the earlier covers recorded to the Colonies, and believed to be the third earliest. By way of comparison, only one pre-UPU cover is recorded from Australia to Egypt. (Image 1) (Image 2)

3304 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Naples 1897 (Sept 3): Cover from Port Said, French Post Offices in Egypt to Maryborough, Victoria bearing 1879 France Type Sage 25 c. black on rose cancelled by Port Said datestamp and prepaying 25 c. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria and with multiple transit datestamps on the reverse. Small closed cover tear at right, a fine and charming cover. The only cover recorded from the French Post Offices in Egypt to the Australian Colonies. Route - Orient Line: Departed Port Said 3 Sept 1897 per “Cuzco” via Suez Canal, Albany (25 Sept) to Adelaide (29 Sept); by rail via Melbourne (30 Sept) to Maryborough, arriving 30 Sept 1897 (63 days). OXFORD arrival (March 31) backstamp. The adhesive with odd short perf, exceptional colour and minor opening blemishes on reverse. Fine and rare usage, the 9 d. issued just two month prior.
