Incoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1858 (Dec 14): Cover from Kandy, Ceylon to Williamstown, Victoria bearing 1857 Ceylon 1 d. blue, close to good margins and 2 d. green, two examples, one with four good margins, second example
with good margins to just touched at top, each indistinctly cancelled and pre-paying 5 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. The reverse with Kandy despatch datestamp in red and arrivals for Melbourne and Williamstown. A very fine and
attractive cover. Cert. RPSL (2013). Route: Departed Kandy 14 Dec 1858 overland to Galle. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Galle (25 Dec) per “Oneida” via King Georges Sound (13 Jan 1859) to Melbourne, arriving 19 Jan 1859 (35

Incoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1874 (Feb 20): Cover from Galle, Ceylon to Newcastle, New South Wales bearing 1872 Ceylon 24 c. green indistinctly cancelled and prepaying 24 c. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South
Wales. Obverse with very fine “GALLE / PAID” datestamp and Sydney and Newcastle datestampsp on reverse of a neat and fine cover. Route - P&O Line: Departed Galle 20 Feb 1874 per “Baroda” (7 March) via King Georges Sound (31 March) to Melbourne (3
April); “Ellora” (8 April) to Sydney (10 April); by steamer to Newcastle, arriving 11 April 1874 (50 days). Note: The unusually long journey of 50 days was due to the P&O Steamer “Nubia” leaving Galle on the 18 February, two days before this
letter was posted. The letter had to wait another month until the next steamer arrived in port. (Image 1)
