1704 cover image1933 Balbo Shediac - Chicago Flight (July 14): Autographed Balbo envelope, endorsed 'VIA ITALIAN CRUISE OF GENERAL BALBO / TO CHICAGO", franked with CAD $1.45 and tied by "SHEDIAC JUL 23 33" duplex to Chicago with arrival of July 15, returned by ordinary mail to "GRIMSBY JUL 17 33 ONT". On July 14th the flight formation took off from Shediac to complete the last two legs (750 km, Shediac - Montreal and 1,550 km, Montreal - Chicago) of the route up to Chicago. This signed cover is one of the 289 covers dispatched from Shediac. Most of the covers were franked with $1.45 which is considered as being the correct rate (Ref: AAMC and Longhi) Longhi 2937 = Euro 1'000. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3099 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1864 (Nov 7): Cover from Prince Edward Island to Bendigo, Victoria bearing 1863 Prince Edward Island 6 d. yellow- green and 9 d. lilac, three examples, one with fault and piece of stamp replaced at base, each cancelled by barred numeral “13” and prepaying 2 s. 9 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Manuscript “1/8” (sterling) in red credit to Great Britain for forwarding to Victoria. On delivery (Feb 12) to Bendigo (Sandhurst), the addressee was unable to be found and struck with “UNKNOWN BY / LETTER CARRIER" handstamp in black together with the oval “UNCLAIMED” in blue. It stayed at the Bendigo Post Office until the Sept 2, when it appears that the letter was delivered. Some minor soiling, however, very rare. Cert. Vincent Graves Greene (2010). Route - Private steamship: Departed Prince Edward Island 7 Nov 1864 by private steamship to Quebec. Inman Line: Departed Quebec (11 Nov) per “Damascus” to Liverpool (21 Nov); by rail via to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (20 Dec) per “Ceylon” via Malta (29 Dec) to Alexandria 2 Jan 1865; overland to Suez; “Nemesis” (5 Jan) to Galle (21 Jan); “Northam” (22 Jan) via King Georges Sound (5 Feb) to Melbourne (11 Feb), by rail to Bendigo, arriving 12 Feb 1865 (97 days). Note: The only cover recorded from Prince Edward Island to the Australian Colonies. 3430 cover/bof imageIncoming Mail via Pacific Ocean 1887 (Nov 25): Cover from Montreal, Canada to Sydney and redirected to Suez, Egypt bearing 1873 Canada 3 c. orange-red, a single and block of four, perf. faults at top, clearly cancelled by the Montreal duplex and prepaying 15 c. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales. On arrival, the addressee, the Canadian physician Rankine Dawson, a passenger aboard the P&O Line steamer “Massilia” which had already sailed, was kept at Sydney and the cover redirected to Suez, Egypt. The cover is endorsed “Via San Francisco” at upper left with multiple transit datestamps on the reverse. A small piece of the reverse of the cover cut out, otherwise fine. A very scarce destination from Canada, particularly with the redirection to Egypt. Route: Departed Montreal, Canada 25 Nov 1887 by rail via Windsor (25 Nov) to San Francisco. Union Steamship Co. of New Zealand: Departed San Francisco (7 Dec) per “Republic” via Auckland (6 Jan 1888) to Sydney, arriving 11 Jan 1888, redirected to Suez (over 47 days). (Image 1) (Image 2)

2332 cover imageMail to and from Neutral Countries: Cape Verde 1941 (Aug. 26): Registered LATI seagull envelope from Espargos on Sal Island addressed to the 'FIUME' Insurance Co. (aeronautical office) in Rome, franked with 16,35 Escudos and carried by SM82 I-SENI, departing Brazil Aug.23, 1941. Rare envelope in very well condition. There is no receiving datestamp although the letter is registered, so it is most likely the letter was prepared by an Italian member of the LATI base there.
