2363 cover imageEastbound Mail from Argentine - 'Admiral Graf Spee' Internee Mail 1940 (April. 27): Single rate cover from Isla Martin Garcia to Wilhelmshaven franked with 1.45 p., consored on arrival with German OKW censor tape on reverse. Very rare PoW Mail, fewer than 10 covers have been reported from Argentine sent by "Graf Spree' internees. Cover goes together with 'Admiral Graf Spee' photocard. The 'Graf Spee' was trapped by three smaller British warships in the neutral port of Montevideo, Uruguay 1939. The crew were interned on Martin Garcia Island from where they could write letters home, but had to use the Condor-LATI service to avoid Allied censorship. One of only two known covers from a known internee which appeared in Imperial Auction catalogue December 1993. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3110 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1883 (May): Argentina 6 c. postal card used from Buenos Aires to Charters Towers, Queensland cancelled by a framed Buenos Aires datestamp (May 31) and prepaying 6 c. for a postcard to Queensland. The transportation of the postal card was interrupted in London (July 1) where the “POSTCARDS TO THIS ADDRESS / CANNOT BE FORWARDED” handstamp in red was applied and the card returned to Argentina. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Colon 7 June 1883 per “Nile” via Jamaica (9 June), Jacmel (12 June) and St. Thomas (14 June) to Plymouth (28 June); by rail to Southampton (1 July) and returned to Buenos Aires, arriving 1 Aug 1883 (62 days). Note: The reason for the refusal to forward this postal card from England to Queensland is difficult to determine. This card has imprinted at top “Universal Postal Universal” for when Argentina joined the UPU in 1878. The card was only available for delivery to UPU members and since The Australian Colonies only joined the UPU in 1891, the postal card was thus refused transmission in England and returned to Argentina.
