Ultramarine Issue 1902: 10 c. ultramarine, balance of stamps and proofs, with Roosevelt small die proof, two SPECIMEN overprints (Type E in dull purple, and Samuel type NA2, struck on receipt by the Natal Post Office), three inking varieties including over and under-inked as well as one showing a plate cleaning solvent smear, used and unused examples of the damaged transfer under "N" of "CENTS", unused lower margin single with partial plate inscription showing the double transfer at lower left, lower left corner block of four showing sideographer John Rout's initials in selvedge, dramatic lower-left corner single showing both marginal initials of the sideographer and plate finisher as well as a striking misperforation due to a paper fold-over, and an unused lower plate strip of three with complete inscription, with thin but of fresh appearance, a few small flaws, mostly part to large part original gum, a desirable and chiefly fine group for the specialist. Special Delivery and 5c postage, struck in violet "FEE EARNED" and "FORWARDED / Delivery Fee collected by / Office of first address", range of San Francisco and RPO transit markings, received in New York and postmarked by Foreign Mail Office (May 16), second address crossed-out and handstamped "OFFERED AT ADDRESS / AT / CAUSE OF NON DELIVERY", with manuscript endorsement indicating the connecting steamer had sailed, Special Delivery informational label affixed overtop of address, ultimate London c.d.s. arrival backstamp (May 26), some small flaws given the cover's extended journey, exceptionally striking and rare, being the only recorded mixed franking of the 1888 and 1902 Special Delivery issues. Special Delivery and forwarded and 1916 usage from Montreal to New York cancelled on route by "Rouse's Point, N.Y. & Montreal R.P.O.", the stamps mostly large part original gum, the block hinged in selvedge only, covers with light wear consistent with commercial use, a lovely study of this issue, fine-very fine. Air Post; 1918 example affixed to cover from London, Ontario to Madison, Wisconsin, accepted despite the stamp having been cancelled in Canada contrary to regulations; unusual 1919 usage on A.E.F. soldier's cover, affixed in Ashland, Ohio for swift local delivery; 1921 uprated stationery cover to Zurich, no service provided as reciprocal special delivery with Switzerland was not available until 1926; scarce 1919 example used on a 2 c. Grant letter sheet, likely delivered Christmas Day; 1920 officially sealed cover damaged in transit; Reserve Bank of New York perfin used on registered bank tag; and 1919 use on parcel post piece, paying a total of $1.59 postage + 10c Special Delivery, some small faults, but a desirable group, highlighting a diversity of usages of this issue, fine-very fine.
