3187 cover imageWith the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War the "Via Marseilles" mail route was forced to close and the more expensive "Via Brindisi" route was utilised. The following 10 lots display the only instance where all the examples of “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / 3” framed handstamps applied at the Foreign Office in London. always in black, for each the of the Colonies (except Western Australia which has yet to be recorded), plus their sub types, to have ever appeared in one auction. It is the most extensive assembly of these scarce handstamps used on Australian Colonial mail to ever come to auction. Overland via Brindisi 1870 (Sept 9): Cover from Buckland, Tasmania to Watford, England endorsed "via Marseilles", bearing 1868-79 Tasmania Chalon 4 d. blue and 6 d. slate-violet, cancelled by barred numeral “73” of Buckland, with town manuscript at left "Buckland 5.9.70".
