Fine and rare, the finer of the two recorded covers with manuscript “41” cancellation of Lake River. Route - Launceston & Melbourne Steam Navigation Co: Departed Launceston 14 Oct 1858 per “Black Swan” to Melbourne (15m Oct). The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Melbourne 18 Oct 1858 per “Victoria” to Galle (13 Nov). The engine room of the “Victoria” flooded and the mail was transferred to P&O Line: “Oneida” (13 Nov) to Aden. The “Oneida” had engine room failure and the mail was again transferred; “Bengal” to Suez (5 Dec); overland to Alexandria, “Niagara” (7 Dec) to Southampton (18 Dec) by rail to London, arriving 20 Dec 1858 (70 days). Note: This, and the cover in the following lot, highlight the problems which plagued the European and Australian Royal Mail Co. Whilst not a shipwreck cover, the incidents are nevertheless recorded in “Australian Wreck Mail” by Brian Peace on page 73. The contents refer to a “fresh gold rush…..some distance north of Moreton Bay...At present accounts are conflicting, but one thing is certain - that the spot is fearfully hot, badly watered & worse supplied with the barest necessities. Hence, fever, ague & dysentery have shown themselves with intense violence”. Provenance: Collections Cress, McNamee. (Image 1) (Image 2)

A rare usage from Tasmania to the United States, with less than ten imperforate covers known to the USA. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Melbourne (5 Feb) per “Oneida” via Galle (28 Feb) to Suez (15 March); overland to Alexandria. Cunard Line: Departed Liverpool (2 April) per “Europa” to New York (18 April); by rail to Newcomerstown, Ohio (over 95 days). Note: This was the final contract voyage of the European and Australian Royal Mail Company. A highly unusual prepayment of postage to a foreign destination. Red manuscripts always represent a credit or prepayment of postage, a remnant of the days of sail and the prepayment of postage before adhesive stamps. Very few examples are recorded in the carriage of mail by the steamers. (Image 1) (Image 2)
