1539 **/bof image1935: Surcharge Essay 7½ pi. on 4½ pi. red-brown & grey, in a sheet marginal block of four, with 7½ PIASTRES typographed surcharge in red, the block with positions 11 and 16 (the left hand vertical pair) showing error of Arabic surcharge "⅓" for "½" - this was corrected when the surcharged issue was released. Superb quality with full unmounted og. The block being one of just two known with the varieties as just two sheets were overprinted in red. Signed Todd AIEP. Cert. C. 1545 cover image1904: Cover from London franked by 1902 1 d. scarlet (July 13), forwarded from Junior Naval & Military Club in Piccadilly to Cairo, taxed on arrival with 1889 2 m. green and 1 m. ultramarine (July 20), these annulled by 'T' marking in black and the cover forwarded on to Khartoum, eventually finding the addressee in El-Obeid where Sudan 1901 Postage Due 2 m. black & brown and diagonally bisected 20 m. ultramarine & carmine were applied (Aug 24). Reverse with small part flap missing but with Ismailia-Caire TPO and Shellal-Halfa TPO's. A rare and appealing cover, see Gibbons footnote. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1546 cover image1893: Cover from Great Britain underpaid (at triple rate) with single 1 d. lilac used from Aberfeldy (Nov 2), addressed to a member of the 17th Lancers in Cairo. Taxed on despatch with framed 'T' and 65 centimes in manuscript, twice taxed in Cairo with 1888 Postage Due 2 m. green, 4 m. maroon, 1 pi. ultramaine and pair of 2 pi. orange (voided with 'T' marking). Re-addressed to Halfa and reverse with Postage Due 2 m. green, 4 m. maroon and 1 pi. ultramarine (5) all tied by WADI HALFA datestamps (Nov 24). 3267 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1885 (April 20): Great Britain 1 d. postal stationery envelope used from Suakim, Sudan to Guildford, New South Wales cancelled by the British Army Post Office in Egypt datestamp and prepaying 1 d. for the Soldier’s concessionary rate to New South Wales. The envelope is endorsed at the top by Corporal George Watt (Enlistment No: 110) of “A” Company of the New South Wales contingent and countersigned at base approving the concessionary rate by Lieutenant Colonel A. Paul. On the reverse are arrival datestamps for Sydney and Guildford. Fine condition and a very rare Sudan Campaign cover to Australia. Route: Departed Suakim, Sudan by steamer to Alexandria 20 April 1885; by rail to Suez; Orient Line: Departed Suez (1 May) per “Austral” via Adelaide (24 May) to Sydney, arriving 27 May 1885 (40 days). Note: The New South Wales Infantry Contingent of 750 men arrived at the port of Suakim, Sudan on the 27 March 1885. They were only involved with brief skirmishes and left Sudan on the 17 May when the campaign ended. Nine covers from the New South Wales Infantry Contingent in Sudan are recorded. Typical horizontal filing crease not affecting stamps and two closed tears top, some stains and soiling, philatelically used, however a colourful franking making use of all the available stamps at that time. The flyers flew as far as Greenland and halfway to Labrador, but were forced to turn back. Mail was forwarded by ship from Ivitgut, Greenland to New York. The Island cover has N.Y. arrival cachets (Sept. 11) and a three line hand stamp “Par aviators / Ahrenberg Floden / Iceland New York” on reverse AAMC1090a+b. (Image 1)
