3274 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1893 Sept 18): Registered cover from Bucharest, Romania to Hochkirch, Victoria bearing 1891 Romania 25 bani ultramarine, a used horizontal pair and single example (Mi. 88) cancelled by two bold Bucharest datestamps and prepaying 75 bani comprising 50 bani for a 1 ounce ship letter plus 25 bani registration to Victoria. “RECOMANDANT” handstamp in black indicating the envelope was registered, with transit datestamps on obverse and reverse. The cover with minor imperfections, otherwise a rare origin for mail to Australia. Route: Departed Bucharest 18 Sept 1893 by rail via Zabern (20 Sept) to Brindisi. P&O Line: Departed Brindisi (25 Sept) per “Massilia” via Port Said, Suez Canal, Aden (2 Oct) to Adelaide (25 Oct); by rail via Melbourne (26 Oct) to Hamilton (27 Oct); overland to Hochkirch (27 Oct); redirected to Penshurst, arriving 29 Oct 1893 (41 days). The adhesives missing the cancellation and tied by pen-crosses in manuscript (a late usage of this method), with Warsaw arrival cds (Sept 10) in black at top. Eigenhändiger Brief 4to. 2 pp. mit Unterschrift von 'Frolovskoye bei Klin, neben Moskau' nach Prag, mit blauer Kopfvignette und eigenh. adressiertem Briefumschlag, datiert am 21.Okt./9. November 1888 als Antwortschreiben in deutscher Sprache betr. Änderungswünschen der Opernsängerin Olga Paršová-Zikešová (1853-1941): "In Beantwortung Ihres freundlichen Briefes beeile ich mich Ihnen gegenüber auszusprechen, dass so sehr ich erfreut wäre wenn Sie meiner Oper durch Ihre Theilnahme einen kostbaren Schmuck gewährten, ich dennoch aus künstlerischen Rücksichten eine solche Aenderung wie die von Ihnen gewünschte Einlage nicht unternehmen kann... P. Tschaikowksy". Briefumschlag mit kl. Einriss an der Oberkante und leicht beschmutzt, frankiert mit 7 Kop. blau gest. 27. Okt. 1888 mit rücks. Ankunftsstempel von "Prag/Praha 12/11". Briefblatt mittig gefaltet, leicht angetrennt und minim fleckig. Ein sehr seltenes Dokument. Vermutlich betrifft es die Proben zu Tschaikowsky's Oper 'Eugen Onegin', die in Prag am 6. 3100 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1867 (July 27): Registered cover from St. Petersburg, Russia to Melbourne, Victoria prepaid 38 kopeks: 30 kopeks for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter plus 8 kopeks registration to Victoria. Multiple postal markings include “30/8” (kopeks) manuscript in red representing the prepayment and “8” (pence) manuscript in red credit from Prussia to England for onwards transmission to Victoria. “AUS RUSSLAND / FRANCO - TOUT” handstamp in black representing the rail carriage from Russia through France and “Recomandirt” registered handstamp in red applied at the Eydtkuhnen exchange office. “PRUSSIA / ♚ / REGISTERED” handstamp in red applied in London and “P.D.” handstamp in red representing paid to destination. Some minor cover reinforcement internally, otherwise very fine and an extraordinary origin for a registered cover to the Australian Colonies. Believed to be the earliest cover recorded from Russia to the Australian Colonies. Route - Departed St. Petersburg 27 July 1867 by rail via Eydtkuhnen, Konnigsberg and Aachen to London (14 Aug); by rail to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (20 Aug) per “Ceylon” via Malta (29 Aug) to Alexandria (2 Sept); overland to Suez; “Surat” (5 Sept) grounding on a reef in the Red Sea. Mails transferred to “Nubia” (11 Sept) to Galle (24 Sept); “Bombay” (24 Sept) via King Georges Sound (8 Oct) to Melbourne, arriving 14 Oct 1867 (77 days). Note: Although postage stamps had been introduced in Russia in 1858, the Russian postal regulations stipulated that: "Postage stamps are only intended for ordinary letters, the postage rate for sending money, registered correspondence and letters destined for abroad to be paid in cash". On the reverse are Russian TPO, Venice and Brindisi cds's, with a faint Adelaide arrival datestamp on obverse. Some minor cover imperfections but an extremely rare destination for Russian classic period mail and one of the earliest covers to this destination recorded. Certs. Vaccari (2019) and RPSL (2021). Route: Departed Russia 1 April 1875 by rail via Venice (16 April) to Brindisi (17 April). P&O Line: Departed Brindisi (19 April) per “Sumatra” to Alexandria (22 April); “Mongolia” (22 April) via Suez Canal to Galle (7 May); “Nubia” (8 May) via King Georges Sound (22 May) to Adelaide, arriving 27 May 1875 (57 days). Note: This cover is addressed to Frederick Wigg whose family founded the Adelaide bookshop of E.S. Wigg & Son.
