3106 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1870 (Nov 14): Cover from Christiania, Norway to Ballarat, Victoria, redirected to Godfrey’s Creek bearing 1867 Norway 3 sk. violet and 24 sk. bistre-brown (Mi. 13+10) cancelled by Christiana datestamps (Nov 10) and prepaying 27 skilling for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria with weiterfranco "Wfr. 8" in crayon on obverse. Reverse with Flensburg transit datestamp and arrivals of Melbourne and Ballarat. On arrival at Ballarat, the addressee Oscar Wedel was unable to be located and there is a manuscript endorsement on the reverse “Gone away” and the “Not known by / Letter Carrier” handstamp in black applied on obverse. The cover was subsequently redirected to the gold diggings at Godfrey’s Creek (Feb 13). Route - By Steamship: Departed Oslo 14 Nov 1870 to Flensburg (18 Nov); by rail via London to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (26 Nov) per “Poona” via Malta (5 Dec) to Alexandria (9 Dec); overland to Suez; “Mongolia” (12 Dec) to Galle (28 Dec); “Avoca” (29 Dec) via King Georges Sound 12 Jan 1871 to Melbourne (18 Jan); by rail via Ballarat (18 Jan) and Melbourne (11 Feb) to Godfrey’s, arriving 13 Feb 1871 (95 days). Note: Only three skilling covers are recorded from Norway to the Australian Colonies, this being the second earliest and the only example with this issue. 3253 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1876 (April 29): Cover from Christiana, Norway to Gobur, Victoria bearing Norway Posthorn 3 sk. rose and 7 sk. deep brown in a horizontal pair, one damaged at base (Michel 18+21) cancelled by the Christiana datestamp (April 29) and prepaying 17 skilling for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Transit datestamps on the reverse for Melbourne and arrival of Gobur. Only three 'Skilling' covers are recorded from Norway to the Australian Colonies, this being the latest and the only example bearing the Posthorn issue. Route: Departed Christiana 29 April 1876 by rail to Brindisi. P&O Line: Departed Brindisi (15 May) per “Pera” to Alexandria (18 May); “Hydaspes” (19 May) via Suez Canal to Galle (2 June); “China” (3 June) via King Georges Sound (17 June) and Adelaide (22 June) to Melbourne (24 June); by rail and overland to Gobur, arriving 27 June 1876 (60 days). 6335 cover image1867 (Aug 2): Small envelope to Vevey, Switzerland, redirected to Interlaken, franked with 1863/64 2 sk., 3 sk., 4 sk. and vertical pair of 8 sk., an extremely rare 25 skilling rate, tied by CHRISTIANIA cds, reverse with blue "KIEL / HAMBURG" TPO datestamp, BASEL and VEVEY transit as well as ambulant Lausanne & ambulant circulaire datestamps. Small cover tear at right, otherwise very fine and attractive. Tasmania is a very scarce destination for mail other than Great Britain. Cert. Dr. J. Helbig (2001). Route: Departed Regensburg 18 Jan 1888 by rail to Brindisi. Transit datestamps for Paris and Marseilles with "SHIP LETTER / FREE / GEELONG VICTORIA" arrival in red on the reverse. Very fine and rare. One of the earliest recorded covers from the City State of Hamburg to Victoria. Route - Departed City State of Hamburg 12 Sept 1857 by rail via Paris (14 Sept) to Marseilles (15 Sept). P&O Line: Departed Marseilles (19 Sept) per “Vanguard” via Malta (21 Sept) to Alexandria (25 Sept); overland to Suez. 1860 imageHelgoland 1867/1875: Königin Victoria1867 2 S. lilakarmin & gelblichgrün, vollständiger postfrischer Originalbogen inkl. Plattenfehler II "kurze 2" in Position 1. Für den Druck wurden zwei Stahlstempel graviert, einer für das Mittelmedaillon mit den Ecken, einer für den Rahmen. Davon wurde wiederum eine Druckplatte mit 50 Druckstöcken erzeugt. Am Rand an einer Stelle angetrennt Mi = € 1'250 für die Einzelmarken. Dazu in ganzen Bögen 3 F. / 5 P.f, 1½ P. / 10 Pf., 3 P. / 25 Pf. & 6 P. / 50 Pf., drei Bögen mit Wasserschäden und ohne Gummi, alle mit mittigem senkrechtem Bug, dieser teils angetrennt. Dennoch ein interessantes Ensemble Mi = € 6'150 Total Mi = € 7400 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6)
