3174 cover imageIncoming Mail Overland via Marseilles 1859 (Jan 13): Cover from Barbados to Williamstown, Victoria bearing Barbados 1858 Britannia 6 d. deep rose-red, imperforate, two examples, one of which does not belong, cancelled by “1” obliterator, prepaying 1 s. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Despatch datestamp for Barbados and transit datestamps for London, Melbourne and a very fine arrival at Williamstown. The contents refer to the receipt of letters from the addressee (no pre-UPU covers are recorded from the Australian Colonies to Barbados) and commercial trade. Very fine and a rarity to the Australian Colonies. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Barbados 13 Jan 1859 per “Derwent” to St. Thomas (17 Jan); “Parana” (19 Jan) to Southampton (17 Feb); by rail via London to Marseilles (19 Feb). P&O Line: Departed Marseilles (20 Jan) per “Vectis” via Malta (23 Feb) to Alexandria (26 Feb); overland to Suez; “Benares” (28 Feb) via Galle (17 March) and King Georges Sound 5.4 to Melbourne 13.4, overland to Williamstown, arriving 14 April 1859 (92 days). 3375 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1891 (March 26): Cover from Morija, Basutoland to Cape Clear, Victoria, redirected to Tyrendarra, bearing 1890 Cape of Good Hope 4 d. blue, clearly cancelled by barred numeral “277” with Moija datestamp at left and prepaying 4 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Endorsed “Per steamer direct” at upper left and with multiple transit datestamps on the reverse of arrival and redirection. Some minor cover restoration, otherwise fine and attractive. A great pre-UPU rarity to the Australian Colonies. Route: Departed Morija 26 March 1891 overland to Cape Town (2 April). Shaw, Saville & Albion Line: Departed Cape Town (11 April) per “Tainui” to Hobart (30 April); overland to Launceston. Private steamship: Departed Launceston (2 May) per “Coogee” to Melbourne (3 May); overland via Cape Clear (5 May), to Tyrendarra, arriving 8 May 1891 (43 days).
