6353 cover imageMacao, 1876 (Nov 21): Envelope to Lisbon, showing superb strike of Crowned Circle "♚ / PAGO / EM / MACAO" handstamp, "B / MACAO" origin cds alongside, red framed "VIA DE / GIBRALTAR" handstamp and handstruck '50' (reis) rate mark adjacent, LISBOA arrival (Jan 11) backstamp. An outstanding cover of great beauty. Note: In this period, all letters emanating in Macao had to be forwarded to Hong Kong for franking there with Hong Kong stamps, except for letters to Portugal and Colonies. The Crowned Circle "PAGO EM MACAO" handstamp is known on covers after 1870, used by the Portuguese postmaster to send letters via the British Post Office (see footnote in Gibbons). 6354 cover imageMacao 1883 (May 1): Small envelope to Lisbon, showing on reverse very fine "♚ / PAGO / EM / MACAO" Crowned Circle in black, with double-ring "Crown / MACAO" cds plus LISBON arrival cds (June 11), on front framed "PER FR. PACKET" handstamp. Envelope a little trimmed at top, couple small light ink marks and very slight ageing on address panel, opened out for display. A fine, late usage of the very rare crowned circle on envelope unusually carried to Europe by French packet rather than P&O Steamer. A neat and splendid exhibition item.
