Incoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1880: Cover most probably from Berbera, British Somaliland to Adelaide, South Australia bearing 1873 India ½ a. blue in a horizontal pair, 1 a. brown and 1866 4 a. green all
cancelled by the horizontal barred “B” obliterators in black and prepaying 6 annas for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to South Australia. No confirming despatch datestamps, the reverse with Aden cds (April 21) and Sea Post Office F cds. Route - P&O
Line: Departed Aden 21 April 1880 per “Bokhara” to Galle (30 April); “Tanjore” (30 April) via King Georges Sound (12 May) to Adelaide, arriving 16 May 1880 (41 days). Note: In all probability, this cover originated in East Africa since it has a Sea
Post Office F circular datestamp of 15 April 1880 on the reverse, dated six days prior to transit through Aden - the outbound P&O Line steamer "Venetia" was at Suez on the 16th. The cover was postmarked with the eight bar “B” at Aden in transit
on the 21 April. A great rarity to the Australian Colonies. (Image 1)
