3362 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1867 (Aug 28): Cover from Hong Kong to Adelaide, South Australia bearing 1863 Hong Kong 2 c. brown and 30 c. vermillion, part backflap and one side flap missing, cancelled by "B62” obliterator, prepaying 32 c. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to South Australia. Endorsed “Via Galle” at upper left and with Hong Kong despatch on reverse with Adelaide arrival datestamp tying the 2 cent adhesive. Some peripheral cover faults, otherwise fine, a rare cover to South Australia. Route - P&O Line: Departed Hong Kong Galle 28 Aug 1867 per “Northam” via Singapore (5 Sept) and Penang (8 Sept) to Galle (17 Aug); “Bombay” (24 Sept) via King Georges Sound (8 Oct) to Melbourne (14 Oct). Joseph Darwent: Departed Melbourne (15 Oct) to Adelaide, arriving 17 Oct 1867 (51 days). Note: Whilst covers from Hong Kong addressed to Germain Nicholson in Melbourne are relatively frequently encountered, covers addressed to other colonies, particularly South Australia during this period, are rare. 3364 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1872 (April 12): Cover from Shanghai, China to Melbourne, Victoria bearing 1863 Hong Kong 6 c. lilac horizontal pair, 12 c. pale blue and 24 c. green vertical pair each cancelled by a bold “S1” obliterator in blue and prepaying 72 c. for a 1 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Endorsed “Via Galle per “Madras” at upper left with manuscript “3/-” in pink at right. The envelope with crossed receiving details at the left. On the reverse is the despatch of Shanghai in blue, transit of Hong Kong and arrival at Melbourne. A highly attractive and rare three colour franking from the famous Germain Nicholson correspondence. Route - P&O Line: Departed Shanghai 12 April 1872 to Hong Kong (15 April); “Tanjore” (18 April) via Singapore (24 April) and Penang (27 April) to Galle (3 May); “Nubia” (11 May) via King Georges Sound (25 May) to Melbourne, arriving 31 May 1872 (45 days). Endorsed “Via Galle” at upper left and with Hong Kong transit and Melbourne arrival datestamps on the reverse. Minor internal cover reinforcement otherwise fine. Route - Private steamship: Departed Foochow 13 May 1873 to Hong Kong (17 May). P&O Line: Departed Hong Kong (24 May) per “Travancore” via Singapore (31 May) and Penang (2 June) to Galle (6 June); “China” (7 June) via King Georges Sound (21 June) to Melbourne, arriving 27 June 1873 (45 days). Note: The letter was written by the daughter of Germain Nicholson who at the time was in the employ of another trading house in Foochow. The contents relate to the export of tea to Victoria and the trading of opium out of India. A short biography of Germain Nicholson is included with the lot. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Route - China Navigation Co: Departed Hong Kong 20 Nov 1892 per “Changsha” via Darwin (29 Nov), Brisbane (7 Dec) and Sydney (11 Dec) to Melbourne (13 Feb); by rail to Talbot, arriving 13 Dec 1892 (25 days). 2174 cover image1871: Lithographed 15 kr. brown (Type A) used in combination with 1871 Engraved 3 kr. green (two examples), 5 kr. red, 10 kr. blue (three examples) and 15 kr. brown on the famous 1872 registered cover at double weight to Paris, France tied by "PEST / TERÉVÁROS" circular datestamps (Jan 13) in black. "AJANLOTT / SZ" handstamp and "PD" and "Chargé" applied in black on obverse with Avricourt entry marking in blue. Reverse with Vienna transit and four red wax seals. Sensibly opened for Exhibit display, a truly spectacular five colour mixed issue franking of great importance to classic Hungarian philately. Unique. Cert. I. Glatz (2023). 2352 cover imageWestbound Mail from Hungary 1941: Registered Cover from Marosvasarhely (March 14) to Buenos Aires together with another R-cover from Kaposvar (May 14) to Brazil, both correctly franked at 4.20 p. and 2.90 p. respectively, the latter to Rio bearing a Hungarian censor tape on the reverse.
