286 cover image1881 (July 1): 5 c. yellow-green on greenish, plate I, imperforate, a single used example with large margins all round, used on 1881 single rate cover endorsed "Per Steamer Alps" (Hamburg-America Line) to Kingston, Jamaica tied by "Port au Prince / Haiti" cds (July 30). Reverse with Kingston arrival cds (Aug 1). The 5 cent rate per 15 grams was applicable for a foreign letter 'Caribbean rate' under 300 miles. Just two covers known, the other (ex Hubbard, lot 200) has faults and was mailed later in the year.
