541 cover image1882: Liberty Head, strip of three 7 c. blue, plate II, first printing, used in combination with 1887 Salomon 1 c. lake, irregular block of five and a strip of three 3 c. blue, used on a registered cover from Port au Prince to Kingston, Jamaica, dated 25 August 1888, tied by dispatch datestamp, framed registered 'R' in black and Jamaica registered oval in black alongside dated 8 September 1888, soiled, although a very rare mailing and very scarce combination franking; the only recorded 'Caribbean Area' rate cover franked with Salomon stamps; the 35 c. franking pays a five-times 'Caribbean Area' foreign letter rate (for distances of less than 300 miles) and the 10 c. registration fee. 547 cover imageMaritime Disaster 1887: Salomon, 3 c. blue, used on a small envelope, from Haiti to New York, dated October 1888, tied by a New York '12' reciever cancel, to reverse post offce label states "P.O. New York, October 26 1888. This letter is part of the mail recovered from the S.S. Atlas, from Port Limon, sunk in New York harbor by collision on the afternoon of the 23rd instant. Henery G. Pearson, Postmaster, N.Y.P.O. Print.", tied by a 'P.O.N.Y' datestamp 27 October 1888, with an additional 'E' datestamp alongside, rare; three covers have been recorded from this wreck of which just two originate from Haiti. Envelope was recovered from the ill-fated 'S.S. Atlas', of the Atlas Steam Ship Co. Liverpool, which had sailed from Limon, Costa Rica, via the West Indies to New York. On arrival, it struck the New York to New Jersey ferryboat 'Plainfield' in the lower New York harbor and sank a few minutes later. There was no loss of life. Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate.
