Crown over A, perf. 12½, an unused verticall pair, variety "Imperforate between Horizontally", of fine fresh colour, hinge remnant at top only, otherwise large part og. This error was first reported in the "Australian Philatelist" in July 1907 but was not listed by Stanley Gibbons until 1925. Just seven pairs and four blocks are recorded. TEN PENCE overprint, 1867-70 1d. bright yellow green with exceptional fresh colour, 1868 1d. bright green,1869 1d. deep yellow green, 1870/1 6d. indigo with unusual vertically misplaced perforations, 1870/3 9d. TEN PENCE overprint, 1876-1900 selection including useful range of shades and perforations, unusual 6d. Prussian blue  and 6d. bright blue (used), each with partially doubled impression, "8 PENCE" on 9d. vertically misperforated error resulting in double overprint (used),  scarce 1/- chocolate horizontal pair, 1886-96 "Long" Stamps with 15/- brownish yellow and 50/- dull pink (used), later 1906-12 printing with 9d. deep lake pair with inverted watermark, 1901-2 including selection of colour trials, 2/- crimson multiples including two blocks of four and block of six, 2/- pale orange-red horizontal pair, wide representation of O.S. overprints including 1891/6 2d. multiples, 1897/1901 1d. rosine with double overprint variety, 2½d. indigo pair with "O.S." inverted (used), 5d. brown purple unmounted margin pair, others showing range of shades, over two hundred items included, twenty eight with accompanying Ceremuga certificates, some faults as expected, and the odd used examples, a valuable holding with many scarce and desirable stamps, worthy of careful examination. 5034 image1855: Recess by Perkins Bacon, 1 d. dark green, wmk. large star, imperforate, a horizontal pair used on 1856 cover from Adelaide to Magill, tied by oval grill obliterators in black, with "PAID / ADELAIDE SA" datestamp alongside in red (June 4), cut into at base and top right side of second stamp otherwise good to large margins, with "Magill / South Australia" datestamp in black (June 5) and displaying well on reverse. 5035 image1855: Recess by Perkins Bacon, 2 d. rose-carmine, wmk. large star, imperforate, horizontal strip of three, used on 1855 cover to London, dated 20 October 1855, four good to large margins all round, very fresh and vibrant printing and shade, cover endorsed "Per Champion of the Sea",  the adhesives tied by grid roller obliterator in black and part  "PAID" circular in red dated 26 January 1856, with "Australia / Packet" alongside dated 25 January 1856, content is dated 18th October 1855, very fine multiple and an early usage of this first issue. 5036 image1855: Recess by Perkins Bacon, 6 d. deep blue, wmk. large star, imperforate, used on cover, from Adelaide to Scotland, dated 18 October 1856, with ample to good margins especially wide on the left side, very fresh vivid colour, endorsed "Per Lemuella to Calcutta and Overland" cancelled by oval grill cancel in black and tied by portion of a "PAID / HO / 14 FE 14/ 1857" in red, the Adelaide paid alongside, with split rate "d3" accountancy marking in red, to reverse a Sterling transit datestamp 15 February 1857, horizontal filing crease and small tear, well clear of adhesive, a fine and interesting cover. 40166 image1844 (July 11): Entire letter from Adelaide rated '6d.'  prepaid in red and '5d.' in black manuscript for amount due upon arrival, struck on reverse with oval framed "? / GENERAL POST OFFICE / ADELAIDE / S.A." datestamp (July 11) in black. Interesting content concerning selling 1'300 sheep at 5/6d. per head and "I have just received a letter from Robert (Leake) where he says he has settled at a place called Lake Leake, he has had an attack by the Blacks twice losing 50 of the sheep, shooting one black and wounding another...several copper mines found also lead mines...". A fine entire.rnrnNote: The entire was written by Robert Leake, son of John Leake (1780-1865), who arrived with his family in Van Diemen's Land in May 1823 on the 'Andromeda'. A successful banker and farmer, he was later a member of the Legistlative Council and his house at Rosedale was restyled by James Blackburn into a stately Italian villa.rnrnProvenance: Prestige, Melbourne, 4 March 2006, lot 644.
