Harrington' in manuscript, mailed from Sydney to Dart Brook, struck with fine oval "? / FREE /N FE 21 / 1838" handstamp in red on despatch. Redirected back to Sydney with exceedingly rare framed "VI / MUSCLEBROOK" well struck in black (this Post Office, some 10 miles from Dart Brook, opened in September 1837 but was re-named Musswellbrook in 1840). 40094 image1849 (Dec 17): Printed Circular number 49/156 from the Colonial Secretary's Office in Sydney concerning the new regulations for Official correspondence and abolishing the Free Franking privileges and stating that from the New Year communications between Departments "must be pre-paid by means of Post Office stamps of the proper value....the necessary supply of Stamps of the different values to be used in this Colony, can be obtaioned by purchase from the Posrmaster General and the several Deputy Postmasters in the Country". The notice with 1 d. orange-red imperforate Plate Proof on yellowish wove paper with good margins on three sides and just shaved at right and 3 d. Plate Proof in deep green on card with four margins applied at a later date and hinged at base. 402 imageIngoing 1858 (14 March): Cover from Dorchester to "Captain Steward, Government House, New Zealand", bearing 2 d. blue (corner fault), 1 d. rose-red lettered CA and 6 d. lilac, tied by neat "DORCHESTER / 256" sideways duplexes, "AUCKLAND / NEW ZEALAND / 5 JU 5 1858" arrival receiver alongside. Reverse with UPWAY and NOTTINGTON undated circular handstamps in black and blue, respectively as well as LONDON transit cds in red. Some edge wear, nevertheless an attractive three-colour franking to an interesting destination.rnNote: Directed to Captain F. G. Steward, private secretary to Colonel Sir Thomas Robert Gore Browne (1807-1887), who was consecutively Governor of St Helena, Governor of New Zealand, Governor of Tasmania and Governor of Bermuda after the end of his military career. He was the 4th Governor of New Zealand from September 1855 to October 1861, his handling of Maori land issues were a contributing factor in the outbreak of the First Taranaki War. His governorship term ended in May 1861; rather than extend it, the Colonial Office in London replaced him with Sir George Grey.
