40048 imageCourbould 1861: Courbould 5 s. original Die Proof in black on India paper (51 x 39 mm.) applied to card mount (97 x 115 mm.) from the original sketch of a Post Office employee, T.W. Levinge and designed by E.H. Courbould and engraved by Frederick Heath. This marvellous Proof was presented by Heath to Miss Courbould, the sister of the artist. On her death it passed to Victor and subsequently to Pelham Courbouild. On reverse of the Proof is the original notification endorsed "Given to Victor Courbould on his death to go to Pelham Courbould". Reverse with "SWAN HILL / VICTORIA" cds and Melbourne cds (June 26). Carried on the "Rangoon" to Galle, the "China" to Suez and the "Delta" from Alexandria. Red "London / Paid" cds on obverse (Sept 10). Slight imperfections and somewhat soild but a rare combination usage: believed to be the sole "Riverina" combination cover from Wentworth via Swan Hill.
