Coloridos 1861: 280 r. red, a fine used example with very large margins all round, used on 1866 cover to France, endorsed "Via Bordeaux" and "Par Guienne" at top, tied by Rio de Janeiro roller handstamp in black with despatch cds at left (Feb 24). Framed "P.D." in red and reverse with superb strike of circular Paquebot "GUIENNE" datestamp (March 2) in black - a very rare usage (Salles fig. 1003). Bordeaux a Cette cds on reverse (March 22). Framed "P.D." in red and 'Brésil / Bordeaux' entry markling in black (Dec 17). Nantes arrival cds on reverse. Illustrated in Edition D'Or no. 59 on page 69. Coloridos 1861: 430 r. yellow in a vertical pair, just touched at base and small crease at top left, tied by sunburst segmented cork cancellations in black to 1869 double rate cover from Rio de Janeiro to Dresden, Saxony at double rate, endorsed "p. Steamer Navarre via Bordeaux". Framed "P.D." in red at left alongside "Rio de Janeiro" despatch cds (July 13). 'Brésil / Bordeaux' entry marking in blue and transit "Aus Frankreich Per Aachen / Franco" in blue (Aug 18). Readdressed on arrival to Königstein and franked by North German Confederation 1868 1 gr. rose tied by "Dresden VII / 19 VIII 68" datestamp in black. Illustrated in Edition D'Or no. 59 on page 71. A wonderful and most attractive cover - the only recorded combination cover bearing the Brazilian 1850-1861 issue. Cert. Incoming Mail 1847/54: Great Britain Embossed 1 s. green in a cut round horizontal pair (Gi. 54) used on 1855 entire letter tied by Manchester / 498 sideways duplexes (May 17) in black. Condition poor with repair at top of entire but a fascinating letter concerning steam engines: "our opinion as to the practibility of working very heavy gradients. We have have directed our attentions since to the construction of an engine which we think will accomplish all that you require and render the question of Railway communication no longer doubtful on the score of practibility, the drawing which we now enclose you will perceive to be a Tank Engine with four wheels coupled...". London transit cds in red (Jan 9), endorsed "via Southampton" at top and carried on RMSP "Oneida" to Rio (arriving Feb 2). Minor imperfections but a very scarce and attractive franking. Circular "Bureau Maritime / Le Havre" cds (May 3) alongside framed "P.P." in red and rated "960" reis due to pay in manuscript. 1843: 60r. black on yellowish paper, early impression, showing outer framelines at top and right, cancelled with neat partial strike of c.d.s., (2 Aug), a lovely stamp in all respects. rnThe "Bulls Eye" stamps of Brazil were issued on August 1, 1843. By the same time the following year, plates were showing significant signs of wear; the "Inclinados" issues were also released in July 1844. While it is possible that this early printing was kept and not used until long after purchase, it is also possible that this 2 August usage is, in fact, from the second day of issue.
