527 imageImperial Airways Crash of 'Boadicea' G-ACOX 25 into the English Channel on 25 September 1936: recovered from the first mail bag which washed up on the French coast, where the red five line cachet was applied; "SERVICE POSTAL FRANCAIS / Correspondence retardée par suite / du naufrage d'un Avion / Reconstituté par le Service Francais / NE PAS TAXER", which allowed the mail to be reconstituted into the postal system without tax and sent onward to Sudan, with arrival on reverse dated 4 November 1936, sent via the Imperial southbound flight AS392. The envelope includes a typed letter from Lawrence Cave, Caterham, Surrey to his brother who was in the Sudan Defence Force, later a signals officer with 'Chindits' in WWII and in 1946 the Chief of Police for the Equatorial Province at Juba, a scarce example to Sudan. 529 imageImperial Airways Crash of Short S.23 'CHALLENGER' at Mozambique Harbour, 1 May 1939: Two covers from London and Southend-on-Sea to South Africa, one with the special "DAMAGED BY SEAWATER / SEAPLANE 'CHALLENGER'" cachet, the other with "FLYING BOAT CORRESPONDENCE DAMAGED BY SEAWATER / / VLIEGBOT KORRESPONDENSIE DEUR SEEWATER BESKADIG" cachet, both in violet, the adhesives have washed off, each cover mounted neatly upon an album page, written-up, one with newspaper cutting showing the flying-boat part submerged and the other with an image of the plane intact on water, an attractive duo. 4001 image1837: John Dickinson Essay for 1 d. prepaid envelope, probably aided by Charles Whiting, printed in yellow-buff for anticipated weights of 1 ounce, with "VR" and Crown and 'London District Post', with 'Dickinsoin' silk threads for protection against possible forgery. 4002 image1840: Mulready 1 d. letter-sheet, stereo A251, an unused example opened for display, showing at right, 1 d. black pl. VIII, lettered KE; 2 d. blue, Plate II lettered AK and 1841 1 d. red-brown on blued, black pl. X, lettered GI; all of fresh bright colours, affixed with manuscript "The stamps have a watermark representing the Crown of England" with manuscript below identifying the stamps. Below the 'Postage' panel of the letter-sheet is written "In 1839 the former rates of postage charged for distance were abolished and a rate of four pence for all letters under half an ounce substituted - In 1840 this rate was reduced to one penny which might be paid at the post office or stamped covers used similar to the above specimens - If a letter was not prepaid the receiver was charged double postage" and at right "The faint lines crossing this speciment (the Mulready) are caused by fine filaments of silk or flax woven into the fabric of the paper". Minor paper thin at top well away from the adhesives, otherwise fresh and very fine. A remarkable item, emanating from Rowland Hill's personal papers with notations written by Pearson Hill. Double arc 'Falmouth' cds in red below (Oct 19, 1844). Just 9 Mulready 1 d. late usages with May 1844 type cancellation and up-rated by 1 d. reds are recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index. An extremely rare plate unused and a most appealing stamp - only five single examples and a vertical pair (QA/RA) of this variety have been recorded - all these have faults except for the example offered above. 4013 image1840: 1 d. black, Plate 2, lettered SL, a fine example with clear to large margins all round and showing large re-entry to the right vertical frame-line, tied to small dated piece '..head Lighthouse, May 1840', by neat Maltese Cross clearly struck in magenta ink. The piece emanates from the Robert Stevenson / Stephenson correspondence, the Chief Engineer for the Northern Lighthouses, he was both designer and builder of various lighthouses and inventor of the intermittent flashing light for lighthouses and Grandfather to the author Robert Louis Stephenson.
