Handstamped "? / PAID" and "? / REGISTERED" in black alongside "PERTH" despatch cds (Sept 19). Unclaimed on arrival and struck with superb "ADVERTISED / AND / UNCLAIMED" in red. Returned to sender with "PERTH" cds (March 7 - with inverted '2' for '1' in datestamp) and reverse with Perth datestamp (March 16, 1882). 40474 imageInternal Revenue 1881: Surcharged "I. R. / ONE PENNY" in black on 3 d. brown, wmk. Crown CC. The two famous examples, one Unadopted "Small Surcharge" and the second Adopted example with slightly "Larger Thicker Surcharge", this last with rounded corner perfs., otherwise fresh and very fine, without gum. Ex the De La Rue archives and illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 6552. De La Rue suggested the surcharge as they were unable to meet the required production schedule for new designs.
