40426 image1849: Second sheet of letter endorsed "Free" in manuscript from Perth to York, signed at lower left by Revett Henry Bland (Acting Colonial Secretary in 1849 until March 1850 - hence the Free franking privilege), struck with heavily inked impression of "? / GENERAL / POST OFFICE / PERTH" handstamp in black. The letter, in poetic form, mentions the attempted assassination attempt on Queen Victoria, presumably the incident involving William Hamilton, who was found guilty of the attempt and transported for seven years (there were in fact eight attempts on Queen Victoria's life) - "the occasion did but give the Queen alarm, for God preserved her Majesty from harm". File folds do not detract from a scarce cover.rnrnNote: Revett Henry Bland (1811-1894), an early settler in Western Australia, arriving aged 18 in August 1829 on the "Marquis of Angelsey". He was appointed resident at York in 1834 and local Protector of the Aborigines in 1841. Acting Colonial Secretary in 1849 until June 1850, he then went back to England and returned to Victoria and was resident director of the Port Philip and Colonial Gold Mining Co. in Melbourne and director of the National Bank between 1863 and 1865.rnrnProvenance: Collection 'Fremantle', Prestige, Melbourne, 11 July 2008, lot 693. 40427 image1854 (June 8): Entire letter from Lynton College, Port Gregory to Wellington, Somerset endorsed "Overland by 1st. opportunity, H.A. Sandford" and "To be forwarded" in manuscript, with faint oval "? / WESTERN AUSTRALIA / PAID" handstamp in red at left. Reverse with London datestamp (Sept 18) and Wellington arrival of the same day both in red, charged '1/8d.' due to pay in manuscript. Interesting content "Though I date this at Lynton I write from the Presidents' Magistrates registry where we Northern settlers have been requesting, alas requesting, some thing to be done for us by Government. Our cattle and sheep being speared and carried off by the natives and the Police too weak to resist the attacks - the settlers being obliged to do Police duty themselves. I am afraid about 50 natives have been shot in the last two months and two white men have been speared and an enormous quantity of cattle and sheep killed, speared and carried off...". Full transcript with the lot, a fine and rare entire.rnrnNote: The writer, H.A. Sanford, was grandson of the Duke of Bedford, was appointed Superintendent of Convicts for a depot established in 1853 at Port Gregory to supply labour to the Geraldine lead mine.rnrnProvenance: Prestige, Melbourne, 9 Feb 2008, lot 754.
