British Post Office 1863: Cover from Cairo to Sheffield prepaid with "6d." in red manuscript, struck with typically over-inked "â™š / PAID AT CAIRO" in red (or an over-use of the linseed oil in the ink make-up) with single ring despatch cds (Dec. 10) in blue at left. Reverse with repaired flap fault and Sheffield (Dec. 23) arrival cds. Rare: less than a dozen examples of this handstamp are recorded, this is a very late use in December 1863 and the only '6d.' rate recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index. Signed Todd AIEP Gi = £ 5'500. Reverse with framed PONDICHERY datestamp of despatch (Feb 10) with crescent INDIA PAID in red on obverse. Madras transit (Feb 12) in red, with French entry marking overstruck by '10' dêcimes due marking in black, for a letter under 7½ grams.
