5470 imageBritish Post Office 1863: Cover from Cairo to Sheffield prepaid with "6d." in red manuscript, struck with typically over-inked "♚ / PAID AT CAIRO" in red (or an over-use of the linseed oil in the ink make-up) with single ring despatch cds (Dec. 10) in blue at left. Reverse with repaired flap fault and Sheffield (Dec. 23) arrival cds. Rare: less than a dozen examples of this handstamp are recorded, this is a very late use in December 1863 and the only '6d.' rate recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index. Signed Todd AIEP Gi = £ 5'500.
