'rosso mattone' in mixed franking with 1879 Umberto 10 c. carmine and 20 c. orange, tied by clear barred '2105' numeral obliterator with matching MODICA despatch cds and registration label as well as framed RACCOMANDATO handstamp alongside. 'rosso mattone' in a horizontal upper left corner marginal strip of five showing variety: imperforate in mixed franking with 1889 Stemma 5 c. 'verde scuro' in a vertical pair, tied by fair barred '206' numeral. Reverse with ROMA arrival (1891, Nov 25) cds. Horizontal file fold well away from the franking, not distracting from this exceptional franking, the largest known multiple of the imperforated variety, correctly paying the 20 centesimi inland rate. 6557 image1881 (Feb 25): Lettersheet from Seniga to Verolanuova, bearing 1866 Torino printing 10 c. yellow-ochre, tied by clear barred '2148' numeral obliterator in black, matching perfect SENIGA cds in black alongside. Reverse with Brescia and Pontevico transit as well as Verolanuova arrival cds's of the same day. The ten centesimi stamp used extremely late after it became invalid on September 1st, 1877. 6559 image1881 (June 8): Registered printed matter wrapper from San Dona di Piave to Venezia, bearing 1866 Torino printing 30 c. 'bruno castano' and 40 c. 'rosa carminio', tied by perfect barred '2662' numeral obliterator and Austrian-type RACCOMANDATA handstamp with matching "S. DONA DI PIAVE" despatch cds and two additional strikes of RACCOMANDATO handstamp alongside. Reverse with VENEZIA arrival (June 10) cds. Wrapper shortened at left and right, nevertheless a fresh franking of utmost attractiveness showing the elusive usage of the Austrian registration handstamp. The franking pays correctly the double manuscript rate with twice 20 c. for the postage and 30 c. registration fee. Signed G. Light horizontal file folds well away from the stamps, some acid ink, nevertheless an attractive three-colour franking cover paying the 150 centesimi rate until disembarkation in Jacmel, an elusive destination from Italy. 6564 image1868 (Sept 25): Sixfold rate Envelope from the 'MINISTERO DI MARINO' in Firenze, directed to the Chief Commander of the Italian Naval Division of South America in Montevideo, bearing 1866 Torino printing 2 l. scarlet, a single example and a horizontal pair, fine and fresh adhesives in a vibrant shade, tied by light '12' numeral obliterator, FIRENZE despatch cds and "P.D." handstamp in black alongside, the latter lateron erased and replaced by a "P.P." handstamp in black. The front was struck in addition by French "ITALIE LANSLEBOURG 28 SEPT 68" entry cds in blue and "LONDON PAID 29 SP 68" transit cds in red. Reverse with blue cachet of the Italian Ministry of the Navy and "TORINO - SUSA" ambulant cds. Minor toning and some edge wear just mentioned for accuracy, a splendid piece of postal history, the two lire definitives paying six times the 100 centesimi rate via Great Britain to the port in Uruguay. However the cover does not show any taxation for the last part of the journey from the port to the addressee (who was presumably at the port). Signed R. Mondolfo, Raybaudi & E. 6565 image1872 (Dec 9): Value envelope with an insured value of 1'361 lire, sent from Persaro to Senigallia, bearing 1866 Torino printing 2 l. scarlet and 10 c. yellow-ochre, tied by fair '119' numeral obliterator, matching PESARO despatch cds and ASSICURATA handstamp in black alongside. Reverse with part arrival cds. Both adhesives with nibbed perforations, file fold nearby the stamps, part of backflap missing, nevertheless an interesting and appealing double rate value cover. Cert. P.' obliterator in black (Sassone = R3) with matching "POSTA MILITARE ITALIANA / QUARTTIERE GENle" despatch cds in black (Sassone = R1) alongside. Reverse with indistinct Modena arrival cds and distribution cachet. Part of backflap missing, not distracting at all from the stunning rarity and historical importance of this item despatched five days after the liberation of Rome. The military headquarters had been moved from La Storta to Rome on September 20, directly after the entry of Italian troops into Rome at Porta Pia. Signed G. & A. Bolaffi; certs. A.
