1905, 21 June, USA, Railway accident at Mentor, Ohio, two entires from Chicago to New York, each with label "POST OFFICE, NEW YORK, N.Y. / The enclosure was damaged in the wreck of the "20th Century Linited" train on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern R.R., that occurred at Mentor, Ohio, Wednesday, June 21, 1905. / WILLIAM R. WILLCOX, Postmaster.". The accident took place about 9.20 p.m., the train no. 26 with engine no. 4686 and five cars (thereof four sleeping cars) was travelling at full speed, 60-70 mph, when it hit an open switch at Mentor station and derailed. It was telescoped, and coals from the fire box immediately ignited the baggage/buffet car behind the engine.

1906, 23 July, USA, Railway accident, ppc from Brussels 7.7.06 to Seattle, Wash., with straight line "Damaged in wreck near CAMDEN, WASH. JULY 23", arrival marks of Seattle 30.7. and redirected to Bellingham 30.7. The Havre & Spokane train no. 3 had crossed the Rockies, and when emerging from a tunnel near Camden between Newport and Spokane, it derailed and plunged over an embankmant into Diamond Lake. Mail clerk C.A.Danner drowned as the mail car sank into 20 feet of water.

1908, 27 May, Canada, Railway accident at Paquette Dam, stationery envelope 2c. from Craik, Saskatchewan 23.5.08 to Dorking, England, with straight line "DAMAGED IN A WRY WRECK" on reverse. Shortly before midnight on 27 May a wave of 200 million cubic feet of water, 20 foot high, began surging down the Current River Valley. The Paquette Dam collapsed, leaving a 150 yard break and washing away the ballast on the approach to the Canadian Pacific Railway bridge. Five were killed, incl. the three train crew, when the train left the tracks and plunged into the swollen Current River. The Paquette Dam was never rebuilt.

In the evening hours of 13 May, the express train D 161 Basel-Amsterdam crashed into a wrecked cargo train. Six persons were killed, a great number (severely) injured.

1910, 21 December, USA, Railway accident at Chicago, Ill., two ppc with scorch marks and straight lines "Damaged by Fire Pitts.&Ohi. /R.P.O. Chicago Yards, Dc. 21st" resp. "Delayed In Wreck / PITTS.&CHI.TR 16 /At Chicago DEC 21'10". Crossing an open switch, a locomotive crashed into the tender of the eastbound Pittsburgh&Chicago's fast passenger train no. 16 at 57th street, Chicago, Ill. The wreck overturned the train's tender, a RPO car and baggage car. The locomotive's boiler exploded and the resultant fire burned the railway cars that had overturned. Local firefighters were summonded, they fought the blaze until it was finally extinguished.

Trying to make up lost time and travelling at 60 mph, the Springfield express jumped off the rails when attempting to cross from outside to inside track. The gas tank and boiler exploded, setting fire to the parlor car, and then spreading to others. Seven persons were killed.

1913, 20 May, USA, Railroad incident, two heavily burnt fragments of mail each bearing straight line "Burnt in Fire / at Santa Fe Depo / Merced Cal. / May 20 13". In the morning hours of 20 May 1913, a fire broke out in the baggage room of Santa Fe Railroad depot at Meced, Cal., which destroyed virtually all of the stored mail, only a few items out of the middle of the bundles could be saved in a reasonably readable condition.
