2208 cover image1841 By Clement Edward, Hong Kong (2 Aug) to England. Entire letter, sent "Overland Mail via Falmouth" and rated "8", showing "Eastern Expedition" annotation. Transit Calcutta (1 Oct), Liverpool (5 Feb). Arrived Weston-Super-Mare (7 Feb). Although free Indian postage was offered to the miliary, onward transmission still had to pay Indian postage. In 1841, British Plenipotentiary Charles Elliot and Chinese Imperial Commissioner Kishen came up with a tentative agreement, Convention of Chuenpi, by which Hong Kong was ceded. However, both governments rejected the convention and dismissed Elliot and Kishen respectivelyfrom their positions. Early mails with explicit endorsement of "Hong Kong" since British possession on 24 Jan 1841.

(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5)

2209 cover image1842 By Indian Dak, "Ningpoo" (3 Apr) to Trincomalee, Ceylon. Entire letter with "Eastern Expedition" annotation for free postage, applied with clear strike of the extremely scarce "Military Post Office China" Webb type 1 oval seal. Transit Calcutta with Shipletter d.s. 1s8d postage was paid on arrival. Although free Indian postage was offered to the miliary, onward transmission still had to pay Indian postage. Webb stated that this marking was used aboard one of HM ships forming part of the Expedition wich participated in the Battle of Chusan and Canton River. This example was applied in Chusan British Military Headquarter. Webb recorded only 2 examples while Dr. Andrew Cheung recorded 5 and it is the second one offered by AVA. (The first one dated 20 Apr 1842, Ex- Ishikasa, Major A.E.Hopkins and Richard Canman, and was hammered at HKD520,000 in Nov 2022, lot no. 790) while this example showcases a even clearer strike. 1842 (31 Jan) Ex- Ishikawa, Sir Percival and lady David, Illustration in Webb Plate 10. 1842 (3 Apr) recorded by L C Scamp 1842 (17 Apr) recorded by L C Scamp 1842 (20 Apr) Ex- Ishikawa, Major A.E. 1842.4.3 由寧波寄錫蘭Trincomalee。 Here are the 5 known examples of “Military Post Office China” 1842 (31 Jan) Ex- Ishikawa, Sir Percival and lady David, Illustration in Webb Plate 10. 1842 (3 Apr) recorded by L C Scamp 1842 (3 Apr) Dr. Andrew Cheung 1842 (17 Apr) recorded by L C Scamp 1842 (20 Apr) Ex- Ishikawa, Major A.E.
