14 **/bof image1905 Mencarini's Presentation Proof of Small Dragon complete set in block of 4. Bottom right stamp of 3ca block with mild thining. Otherwise Very Fine. It was said that Mencarini picked up some discarded cliches of Large and Small Dragon stamps in Customs. Four dies of each denominations were selected and arranged them in the format of block of 4 and printed with blue-black ink on thick paper. Some of them were given to his friends as a gift. Complete uncut proof is extremely scarce. Illustration fig 2-24, p. 26 in "The Small Dragon" by M Y Ho.

1905年綿嘉義私印小龍四方連全樣張。除3分銀四方連之左下一枚帶輕微揭薄外，均上品。 據聞綿嘉義於海關造册處的廢棄鐵櫃中發現了一些生鏽大小龍票子模，每款面額都挑選出四枚，並以四方連的形式，以藍黑色墨油墨印於厚紙上。部分成品被他用作禮物贈送友人。當中未裁原張極為稀罕少見。 何沐源著《小龍郵票》第26頁圖2-24原件。(Image 1) (Image 2)

Transit Customs Shanghai (23 Aug). In combination with US issue 5c, tied by black grid, alongside with USPA Shanghai type III oval d.s (24 Aug). Transit San Francisco (18 Sep). Arrived New Haven (24 Sep). Steve Chazen stated that outgoing Small Dagon covers via US Post Office are very rare in "Selected Treasures of Small Dragon Covers". Another very similar cover dated 1888 (19 Apr) with the same address was seen in "Huayou JiJin II - US Postal Activities in China" by Mizuhara.

Small Dragon clean perf 11-1/2 3ca in block of 4 + Empress Dowager 2nd Print surch large figure, wide spaced 8c/10ca, tied by Kiaochow PO oval d.s. In combination with German ovpt. China diagonally 5pf + 25pf, in total of 30pf international registered rate, tied by Tsingtau German PO (17 May) cds. Arrived Lichtenthal (29 Jun). The 12ca value of Small Dragon block was treated as 12c, plus the Empress Dowager 8c, making up the 20c international registered rate. Interesting combination franking of candarins and cent stamps. Illustration fig 3-187, p. 302 in "The Small Dragon" by M Y Ho.

1900.5.17 膠州寄德國的茂斯。掛號紅條封，貼小龍光齒11度半3分銀四方連 + 慈壽再版加蓋大字長距8分蓋10分銀，銷膠州郵政局橢圓形日戳。加貼德國斜蓋China 5芬尼 + 25芬尼，合30芬尼國外掛號郵資，銷青島德局5.17日戳。6.29抵Lichtenthal。 小龍四方連之12分紋銀被當洋銀使用，加上慈壽票8分，合2角國外掛號郵資。有趣之紋銀洋銀混貼封。何沐源著《小龍郵票》第302頁圖3-187原件。(Image 1) (Image 2)

Transit Hague (14 Jun). With original letter and attached with a photo of the Wanshou Temple. Scarce example with complete original letter instead of merely postcard. Important material for the study of WWI POW.
