Folded letter dated March 2, 1853 from St. John to New York, with a very fine strike of the red FAVORS EXPRESS PAID (JGY 181) handstamp on the flap. The letter was handed in as a loose ship letter to Col. Favor on board the ship Admiral, with Boston March 7 transit, straightline “SHIP” and “STEAM” markings, and rated handstamp “7” (5c inland plus 2c ship fee collect). Very Fine and Scarce Marking in Red with "Steamer Admiral"

"Favor's Express, Steamer Admiral, Nov. 1856" red circular datestamp on backflap, with red "Colonial Express Mail, St. John N.B., Nov. 3" circular datestamp on cover to Watertown Massachusetts. The Name-of-Boat cachet and Route Agent handstamps were applied on board the Admiral at St. John. At this time Favor was using the "COLONIAL EXPRESS MAIL / ST. JOHN, N.B." STAMP". The route agents stamp struck in red indicates that the cross border rate of 10 cents had been prepaid on the letter addressed to Waterstown, Massachusetts. Hahn records that the Steamer Admiral marking is usually struck in black.

June 18, 1844 folded letter receipt for an express package of money from Livingston, Wells & Pomeroy in Utica to Albany, with red “Express Mail Jun. 18” datestamp and manuscript 12 1/2c double rate via Utica and Schenectady railroad. The printed “Pomeroy & Co.” designation on the receipt form is crossed out, with “Livingston, Wells & Pomeroy Express” written in manuscript, reflecting the firm’s dissolution just months prior. Pomeroy & Co. was dissolved on April 27, 1844 and succeeded by Livingston, Wells & Pomeroy. The manuscript note states, “The package of money for which the annexed receipt is given, is forwarded this morning by Livingston, Wells & Pomeroy Express.”

Folded letter datelined “Charles Town Augst 4th 1764”, addressed to Edward Shippen Junr. Esqr. in Philadelphia. carried to the Boston post office where manuscript “Bos” and “7 dwt” (pennyweight) were added at upper left. Under the British Act of 1710, the Boston to Philadelphia rate of 1 shilling 9 pence was calculated as 21 pence, or 1/9 of a shilling. In Philadelphia, the 21 pence was multiplied by the inflation factor of 1.67, resulting in 35 pence, with the Philadelphia carrier fee of 2 pence added, for a total due of “3/1” from the addressee. Soiling and breaks along cover. The addressee, Edward Shippen, comes from a prominent family in Philadelphia. He was Philadelphia's second mayor, appointed by William Penn.
